For Krys...Eating Alkaline
Krys, you asked me to discuss what "eating alkaline" is, and what it means. I have understood what eating alkaline is for many years, but never really did it specifically. Having an alkaline body basically just means you are feeding your body highly alkalizing foods, in order to keep your body ph average at over 7.0, into the alkaline range.
pH stands for power of hydrogen, which is a measurement of the hydrogen ion concentration in the body. The total pH scale ranges from 1 to 14, with 7 considered to be neutral. A pH less than 7 is said to be acidic and solutions with a pH greater than 7 are basic or alkaline. Our ideal pH is slightly alkaline - 7.30 to 7.45. You can test your pH levels regularly by using a piece of litmus paper in your saliva or urine first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything.

The link gives examples of acidic foods versus alkaline foods. Keeping your body alkaline will basically just adjust your weight naturally. As I said before, you really don't see fat vegans or raw foodies.....they don't count calories, don't starve themselves, or whatever. They really just focus on eating alkaline, for the most part, with some cooked or acidic foods. Cooking foods automatically make them more acidic, and all processed foods and meats are acidic.
For people with a cancer diagnosis, it's absolutely critical to maintain an alkaline body as cancer cells do not thrive or do well in an alkaline environment.

Quinoa is alkaline. I make a big pot of quinoa and lentils that lasts me though the week. I cook them in chicken broth and olive oil. I add salt, onion powder, dried dill, salt, and pepper after cooking and it's amazing. I will usually add some of that good, flavored, olive oil as a finishing when I heat it up. Incredible! The butter flavor is incredible on top! I actually just ate some.
If you're interested (or anyone for that matter), for some really delicious, quick, incredible, raw recipes online are here:

Laura Jean is amazing, and has a great site. So even if you don't do any of the recipes, you can get some good ideas. The sweet, chocolate, stuff is unbelievable. I make some of her recipes, but I don't use dates (I use stevia drops or Trader Joe's stevia). Dates are really sweet and rich...and alkaline. Sugar is highly acidic.

sugar is like an accelerant for cancer.... (I'm sure you already know that though)
We started using stevia a few months ago...I like it...the hubby says it tastes too herbal.

I had to try several different brands of stevia before finding one that didn't taste like licorice (I love licorice, but not as a sweetener). If you have a Trader Joe's near you, try their stevia. It's really good. Also, the flavored stevia drops are amazing. You can find them at Kroger's, but the best array of flavors is at Amazon:

I *love* the chocolate, english toffee, and chocolate raspberry ones. Peppermint and lemon are excellent as well. They even have a new pumpkin spice one. They are highly concentrated, so you really don't use that much (just a few drops in coffee, for example). A bottle lasts for months and months.

I haven't tried TJ's.. I'll look for it.
I switched to stevia a couple of years ago and never looked back. I've got a BUNCH of Demerara sugar just looking for a place to go. (it's a bummer too, because I LOVE the taste of it!)

At the bottom of the page in this link is a list of foods in order, contrasting most alkaline foods to the most acidic.

When I first changed my diet it was mainly due to GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease). But as I went on it I found it also helped relieve migraines, boost energy, and relieved some mild depression.
For the most part I merely began by slowly adding the most alkaline to my diet and eliminating or limiting the most acidic. Increasing the substitutions down the list a little more very few days.
I eliminated coffee slowly over about two weeks to avoid caffeine withdrawals.
I limited meat to one, 4-6 oz, serving about 4 times a week.

Thanks Catchy and Papa, interesting stuff. Do you guys ever get bored with alkaline foods or crave the acidic ones?
On a good note I do love the top alkaline food, just cut up a seedless one today. :)
