You need some general fitness before you even try and some natural endurance and most importantly, some talent for recuperating quickly.

During a time when I was only working my upper body (in addition to running) I decided to try some deadlifts again and put on 250 pounds which I lifted easily. But the result was that I was sore for no less than two weeks after that. And it hurt ! Gradual accomodation is important with advanced training methods.

All I have to do is reduce my sugar intake and eat no bread, pasta, potatoes or rice...weight drops..
I typically increase fresh salads to fill me up and add some good fat like butter, olive oils, almonds and maybe coconut oil..then my deprived cells get happy again...even happier really...

Yeah, that's why I do it because it's so intense. Stuff I would never do on my own, or finish on my own. And it's more 'real life' stuff/movement than just regular bodybuilding and cardio. Because of the Olympic style weight lifting you really build strength and the core and the things you do translate to more 'real life' actions. When I did the scuba diving I was thankful that I had been doing Crossfit for 4 months prior.

The recuperation is how I judge how fit I am. I'm amazed now (at 59) how quickly I recover from the workouts. By time I sit there a few and then drive home I'm pretty much over it.

I'm quite sure I could set up some workout that I could complete easily and you couldn't complete at all. Still you might recuperate more quickly from doing your workout than I would from doing your workout. Or at least some of them. Some of this has to do with genetics.

This is what I've been doing the last week. On Wednesday I ran half mile intervals, on friday I worked my upper body, today I've been running 600 meter intervals and now I'm going to do some lower body work, squats and stuff like that. Which implies that I don't work any part of my body more than twice a week. I don't work out two days in a row either unless I have to. I suppose that Fuego doesn't do the exact same every day of crossfit but he most likely works the same body parts strenously two days in a row often enough. I can't cope with that. But I can cope with working very hard, just less often.

It also has to do with what your body is conditioned to doing. (which you mentioned in your next post) If I run 2 miles everyday, I will eventually get to the point where it doesn't have the same effect on my metabolism, and muscles that it did before. That's why cross training is so beneficial.

Every form of exercise has its own benefits. Some of it is about getting the body to an advanced level. I wouldn't be able to do that with pure cardio, like swimming+running+cycling but I am able to do that with weight training plus running in addition. Then just keeping with it and trying to improve little by little helps a lot. My dad who is 72 started lifting weights at 62 and it works for him. He is still improving and in some exercises he is actually at a fairly advanced level irrespective of age. Much stronger than the average 25 year old man, that would be. You should see him do 10 one arm rows with a 75 pound dumbbell.
