Overweight people less likely to die early than the slim, study shows

-Millions of Britons classed as overweight actually have a lower risk of death than those who are slimmer and deemed to be the most healthy, a new study suggests.

The definition of 'overweight' may need to change after research showed that the healthiest size has increased by 3.3 Body Mass Index (BMI) points since the 1970s.

People who have a BMI of 27 – which is officially classed as overweight – now have the lowest risk of dying from any condition.

Crucially the average BMI for a British man is 27 and for a woman is 26.9 meaning large numbers of Britons, who are currently classed as overweight, actually have the optimal BMI and the lowest chance of death. In contrast, those deemed healthy could be at greater risk than they think.

"The study is important because compared to in the 1970s, today's overweight individuals have lower mortality than so-called normal weight individuals, said Dr Borge Nordestgaard, chief physician in clinical biochemistry at Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark.

"Therefore, these results would indicate a need to revise the categories presently used to define overweight, which are based on data from before the 1990's.

"Maybe moderate overweight people need not be quite as worried about their weight as before..."

I just saw an other study that claims that a BMI of 24 is best for longevity. I suggest that posters calculate their BMI and see how it compares to 27 though, that may amount to a lower weight than most would think.

I just did it and came up with 25.1 (overweight) but, according to this study... I have a lot more Twinkies to eat so that I can live forever!

Seriously thought, I do think that as one gets older, it's better to carry a little more weight, it smooths out the wrinkles on your face, and gives you a little room if you get sick and start losing weight.

It's a long way from 24-27 down to under 18 which is underweight though.
