Here's What Happened When Some Dude Ate Like The Rock For A Month

Mark Webster saw the most ludicrous diet plan on the planet and decided to try it out.

As I wrote last year, the movie star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, in order to maintain his legendary physique, eats more than 5,000 calories a day. The calories, spread over seven meals, include roughly 2.3 pounds of cod, a fish particularly rich in protein. The rest is eggs, steak, chicken, vegetables and potatoes — all told, about 10 pounds of food per day. In one year, The Rock consumes more than one-third of a ton of cod alone.

Unlike Johnson, Webster is not a former pro wrestler, nor is he a staple of the “Fast and Furious” movie franchise. He does not have a show on HBO. He’s just a normal self-employed guy who’s tried to get in shape over the past couple of years. And when he read about Johnson’s daily routine, he did not feel awe or disgust or fear, but instead saw a life he wanted to try for a month. Here’s that routine:

Webster did this from Feb. 1 through March 1 — and chronicled his progress online (I kept in touch with him throughout). The main takeaway: Being The Rock is exhausting, expensive and exactly as rad as you would think.

Based on the data Webster sent me — scrupulously compiled over the course of this exercise — he spent a total of $1,262 on food. That’s about $42 per day, including $18 worth of cod...

From the link. One of the Rock's "cheat meals".....

The Rock’s cheat meals are epic. After he ate clean for 150 days while preparing for Hercules (the plan I’ve followed), his cheat meal consisted of 12 pancakes, 4 double dough pizzas and 21 brownies.

The rock is huge and works out a lot which translates into a lot of calories burned. It's a fairly safe bet to assume that he (ab)uses a lot of big anabolic steroids and especially to maintain that bulk at the age of 40+. He looks a bit worn. He probably doesnt abuse insulin to get even bigger, which would have messed up his diet since it would then revolve completely around eating after getting insulin shots. With his 250+ pounds of lean bulk a 5000 calorie diet makes sense. How much the other 200 pound guy is working out to burn 5000 calories per day is an interesting question.

Hey Colonel, what's the deal with T?

I know some guys who take testosterone shots so I could draw some conclusions based on observation, self control issues, etc but is it bad for you?

Well it's obvious he lost fat and gained muscle which is heavier than fat. He's definitely smaller, but the same weight, which means he replaced a lot of that fat with muscle. Just more proof that you can get smaller without losing weight when including weightlifting in your regimen. If he'd been going by weight loss only he'd have gotten pretty discouraged. Which is why you have to go by the measuring tape and not weight when eating right and working out while doing it.

Way back in the day I read a great book by Covert Bailey called "Fit or Fat?" That's where I first learned the concept of fat being lighter than muscle, and when getting fit you can actually lose size without losing weight because of the muscle gain. He actually had female clients that got discouraged and actually quit his program because they didn't lose any weight, even though they lost inches, which is really the goal. They couldn't get past that there was no weight loss, even though they were smaller, which is what they were really after.

He also redefined 'fitness' not according to weight, but fitness as the ratio of body fat to muscle mass. A person can be say 6' and weight 250lbs. But the weight isn't the point. The thing is how much of that 250lbs is lean muscle mass compared to body fat? That 6' person can be 250, and have 5% body fat, and be totally fit, or he can be 250, and 40% of it can be fat which obviously means he is unhealthy.

Think about this: say you are 30% body fat (which means you have 70% muscle) and then you lose a lot of weight. You can have lost weight but still be at the same 30/70% ratio which means you lost size, but you're no 'fitter' in regards to ratio of body fat to muscle mass! On the other hand, you lose weight, yet exercise and do strength training at the same time, and you don't lose as much weight, but you gain muscle mass and now you're only 10% fat (you lost 20% of your fat) and much 'fitter' and smaller to boot. Hope that makes sense.

Taking testosterone to mimic youthful levels is less dangerous than taking it (or anabolic steroids) in the quantities typically used to promote extreme muscle growth. But it is still related to various side effects (including psychological ones) and health problems. Injecting growth hormone the same way has its own array of possible side effects and some of them are irreversible, for instance bone growth - including in the skull. The effect of injecting these hormones is simply not the same as when the body produces them naturally, even if the resulting levels are the same (injecting to reach youthful levels). Stimulating the body to produce more of these hormones on its own is much healthier, exercise will stimulate growth hormone production, for instance.
