Probiotics & Prebiotics are good for leaky gut. They have a good supply of both at Whole Foods and The Natural Grocer.

Well, not really. They don't actually HEAL the gut wall. They can re-populate the gut, but they don't have any ability to actually heal what is called, "junctures". Things that actually heal the gut wall are: l-glutamine, biotin, a product called Restore, slippery elm bark, zinc carnosine complex, and a few other things.

If you take Restore, Dr. Bush (one of the inventors) actually doesn't want you to take any digestive enzymes or probiotics at all. I am taking Restore right now. I think it might have literally saved my life......I'm not taking any probiotics, and I took them everyday for 20 plus years. I will eventually add them back in, but I'm taking Restore for 6-9 months.

Probiotics are fine to take if you aren't taking Restore. But they don't heal the gut wall.

AJ, have you been able to decrease the amount of those drugs you've been taking yet?

I thought we had a thread here about how its actually a lack of acid that causes GERD but it maybe it was on our old forum. I recall how several folk said that by taking a swig of apple cider vinegar or other acidic substance they were able to once again eat offending foods without any difficulties.

I am finally OFF the prescription PPI (proton pump inhibitor/acid blocker)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I alternated between the PPI and Zantac for about 2 months and then replaced Zantac with apple cider vinegar for probably only about a week and now, I'm just doing the apple cider vinegar, a TBSP mixed in a small glass of water 2-3, even 4x a day, followed by about a half tsp of raw honey, to kill the taste of the ACV.

It's working really well... I mean REALLY well... the last time I tried to do this without the ACV, the rebound reflux was uncontrollable and I ended up going back on the PPI.

I'm still getting a little heartburn, depending on what I've eaten, so I'll just pop a TUMS if I'm away from home, or take some more ACV if I'm home.

I thank everyone for their input, experience and advice. I feel like I won a battle.

...... I had been weaning off the PPIs when I had the diverticulitis attack in April and then May so with that whole mess, I ended up taking it full time again, so had to start the process all over again ... not sure how happy my dr is going to be with me.

Here is something counter intuitive but it worked for me.

The muscle that controls reflux, that keeps food contents in your belly senses acid levels. When the proper amount of acid is in your belly it stays shut.

I added acid, apple cider vinegar (a mild acid) and it all fixed, On occasion, when I am too full (another reason for reflux), I take about a 3/4 teaspoon of baking soda to clear the gas, get a big burp and everything is fine.

I had awful reflux and tried the pills. I chucked the pills, did the ACF and all is good. Just take that baking soda when you feel bloated or too full.

Lack of proper acid levels causes the reflux, get that right first.

Thankfully I've never really had that issue, maybe only once in a blue moon and a Rolaids would fix it. But I do know a couple of people who take those drugs and its nice to know how to advise them.

John, do you take the baking soda before or after the ACV? I'm assuming you dissolve the baking soda in water, how much...half a cup?

No, just take the ACV to restore proper ph (acid/alkaline balance) initially, you may just need a day or two of tablespoons to get that acid right (you NEED that acid). As maintenance, if you are feeling too full just do a 1/2 to full teasoon of baking soda in a small amount of water to realease the gas buildup in your belly, a lot of the fullness, which leads to reflux is just gas. Get what I call a truck driver burp and you'll be good to go. You don't need to do it everyday, just when you sense that you have over eaten. Too many liquids can also overfill the stomach so limit that as well.

Actually, John, it was your advice on a thread in our old forum that got me turned on to ACV. So thank you. I really REALLY wanted off that med and I'm not sure I could have done it without the ACV.

So I'm curious now, from what you said in your post to Krys that " initially, you may just need a day or two of tablespoons to get that acid right" ... Does that mean you don't take ACV daily to maintain the stomach acid Ph?
