I still use sugar for baking...

About three years ago, I weaned myself from using (tons of) sugar in my coffee and tea - Now I drink my coffee with only a bit of International Delight creamer, and nothing in my tea - Took me a minute to get used to it, but now, I wouldn't go back for anything.

I'll still have a glass of sweet tea or ginger ale once or twice a month, but since Diabetes runs in my family, I've cut waaaaay back on sugar and sweets in general.

I stopped drinking soda years ago, but when I want one, I drink Vernor's ginger ale. Or if I can't get that, Sprite. But that's only a couple of times a year. I sometimes use organic raw honey in my tea, but never sugar.

A close friend died of cancer the day before Thanksgiving. She told me a few months before she passed that "sugar loves cancer, or vice versa." I'd never heard that before. She told me the medical professionals confirm it and that a friend was led to tell her that.

She wasn't consistent with changing her eating habits, and up I sometimes wonder if it would have made a difference in her living longer.

If you do a forum search on the word ketogenic you will find several threads that touch on how a no carb diet kills cancer cells. Here's another article on it:

...How Does Ketogenic Diet Starve Cancer Cells?

Dr. D'Agostino explains how the ketogenic diet can have such a dramatic (and rapid) effect on cancer. All of your body's cells are fueled by glucose. This includes cancer cells. However, cancer cells have one built-in fatal flaw – they do not have the metabolic flexibility of your regular cells and cannot adapt to use ketone bodies for fuel as all your other cells can.

So, when you alter your diet and become what's known as "fat-adapted," your body starts using fat for fuel rather than carbs. When you switch out the carbs for healthy fats, you starve the cancer out, as you're no longer supplying the necessary fuel – glucose – for their growth. As D'Agostino explains:

"Your normal cells have the metabolic flexibility to adapt from using glucose to using ketone bodies. But cancer cells lack this metabolic flexibility. So we can exploit that..."
