Anti-Semitism and Anti-Zionism: Same Idea, New Cloak

"Comparing antisemitism and Anti-Zionism and showing that the latter is the modern form of the former may be easy if we simply use the US state department 2010 definition of antisemitism that states that "Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities." (This is based on the Working Definition of Antisemitism by the European Monitoring Center on Racism and Xenophobia). The State department then provides a list of contemporary Examples of antisemitism, many of which are performed by Anti-Zionists":

From the end of the article:

...Anti-Zionism is promoted mainly by the ultra-radical left and by radical liberal groups, and enjoys the support of ultra-radical and radical liberal Jews as well, who were opposed to antisemitism. There is a difference also in the nature of the opposition to these attitudes. The opposition to Anti-Zionism is led by the Jewish people and supported by many Western leaders and grass roots, who are much more able and self-confident in fighting it, thanks to a large extent to the existence of Israel, the nation state of the Jewish people, and to the lessons learned from the limited resistance in the past to antisemitism and the disasters it brought upon the Jews and upon the entire humankind.

Interesting article Ohev...and welcome to the forum! :)

2 Samuel 5:6-8New International Version (NIV)

    David Conquers Jerusalem

6 The king and his men marched to Jerusalem to attack the Jebusites, who lived there. The Jebusites said to David, “You will not get in here; even the blind and the lame can ward you off.” They thought, “David cannot get in here.” 7 Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion—which is the City of David.

I found this passage interesting and taught on it years ago from a spiritual aspect...do we have any ZIONs in our life...area's of strongholds that should not be there, that are 'in our face' every day mocking us, mocking our God...

I never really understood why Jews are referred to as Zionists?

Because that was when David conquered Jerusalem and made it the king's city and Solomon later built the temple and made the city a dwelling place for the Lord. Mount Zion is where the Jebusite fortress was found that David had to conquer so Zion is a synonym for Jerusalem.

Psalm 2:6 "Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of*Zion.”

Psalm 48:2 Beautiful in elevation, The joy of the whole earth,*Is*Mount*Zion on*the sides of the north, The city of the great King.

Psalm 50:2 Out of*Zion, the perfection of beauty, God will shine forth.

Psalm 51:18 Do good in Your good pleasure to*Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem.

Psalm 74:2 Remember Your congregation,*which*You have purchased of old, The tribe of Your inheritance,*which*You have redeemed— This Mount*Zion*where You have dwelt.

Psalm 76:2 In Salem also is His tabernacle, And His dwelling place in Zion.

Psalm 78:68 But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount*Zion*which He loved.

Psalm 84:7 They go from strength to strength;*Each one*appears before God in*Zion.

Psalm 87:2 The*Lord*loves the gates of*Zion*More than all the dwellings of Jacob.

Psalm 99:2 The*Lord*is*great in*Zion, And He*is*high above all the peoples.

Psalm 102:21 To declare the name of the*Lord*in*Zion, And His praise in Jerusalem

Psalm 125:1 Those who trust in the*Lord*Are*like Mount*Zion,*Which*cannot be moved,*but*abides forever

Psalm 128:5 The*Lord*bless you out of*Zion, And may you see the good of Jerusalem All the days of your life.

Psalm 132:13 For the*Lord*has chosen*Zion; He has desired*it*for His dwelling place:

Psalm 135:21 Blessed be the*Lord*out of*Zion, Who dwells in Jerusalem! Praise the*Lord!

Psalm 149:2 Let Israel rejoice in their Maker; Let the children of*Zion*be joyful in their King.

A "Zionist" is meant to refer to someone who believes in and supports the legitimacy of modern's Israel's existence. By that definition, a lot of people not just Jews are "Zionists."

But often it is used as a term of derision by those who reject Israel's legitimacy and in some cases, even Christians can be anti-Zionists, which is tragic. Jews who are patriotic are Zionists and that term is used, when it comes to Jewish people to describe patriotic Israeli Jewish people or Jewish people who are not Israeli but support Israel.

When I was in Israel a friend and I met two young Jewish women who were staunchly anti-zionist, they were both left wing politically but there are many secular Jews who agree like them.
Good news was that we shared the gospel for over an hour with them and they genuinely listened. They were both surprised that we spoke highly of Israel and we used scripture to explain to them the historical blessing on Israel for serving God.
