Let me add some quick notes then in relation to homeless women and kids who sleep in shelters. I was surprised to learn that in most cases toys in general are not allowed there because of space limitations so it was suggested that activity and coloring books and crayons are a better choice and that women hygiene products and toiletries are always needed.
Even for homeless adults crossword type books and pens and pencils are appreciated because they help pass their time altho any types of books, children or otherwise, were mentioned as good choices too.

Another quick idea, is how about a huge bake off? You say you have 9 co-workers. You all could make two batches of cookies, brownies, etc., I am sure you all could come up with something in the baking area. Then you gather them all together and take a cookie/brownie from each batch, so you would have 9 different sets of deserts.
It's a low cost idea, and I am sure that every one has a "goodie" ready to go in their kitchen and no one would need to spend any real funds. The holidays are upon us, and I am sure we are all gearing up for those special deserts for our families.

So far we have about 36 hand made scarfs, lots and lots of small toiletries for gift bags...about 50 of the emergency blankets the military use...tiny, waterproof, and insulated to hold in body heat...they fold up to about 2" by 3"..36 pairs of gloves...
We are going to meet tomorrow to begin our decorating strategy...will take pictures as things take shape...
