    Picking

American Pickers is hands down my favorite series on tv. I love picking. Junk yards, antique stores, yard sales and what not. Today was a great day for making a pick. About 4 years ago I had passed up a Flexible Flyer snow sled for the price and since then have noticed the rise in popularity. The "FF" sled is a first, was received patent in 1889 and since then it's been game on. In snow states, every kid had one under the Christmas tree at one time or another. Today, I hit the jackpot.

About 3 blocks from our house is an antique store that is shutting down. THAT is a picker's dream. Except for a select few items so marked, everything is 70% off. So I noticed most of the 80-90yr old stuff had the "price as marked, firm". There hanging above a main window was a Flexible Flyer with a reg price 75.00 tag. Wow!!! Even at the regular price it was an outright steal. I grabbed it for 22.50! Two old guys were pointing at it wondering what the age would be. I told them just guessing maybe in the 1930s or 40's. My aim was to surprise my wife because she is a great seasonal decorator. I found a website that gives info on dating your vintage Flexible Flyer. I pegged it at pre-1914. An expert and enthusiast (they love to restore, repair and slide them) said "no way, that is the series 1 and could be in the 1890's. There are millions of these sleds but not the first series. Kids and adults used and abused them, trashed and tossed them because they were abundant and cheap. So, here is a rare bird. For 22.50. Thank you, Jesus.

Speaking of Pickers, I just met a couple today at a restaurant that were on that show in '12. MY friend knew them and said hey, and not sure how it came up but it did. They have a big piece of property they set up kind of a Christmas drive through every year that thousands drive through. Someone tried to buy the stuff from them a few years ago to do it and charge for it, but they didn't sell. They had a grandkid that dies a few years ago, so all they do is ask for donations and they give all that money to the March of Dimes. They said they've been able to donate over $150k over the last few years. If I find the episode I'll post it.

Couldn't find the Pickers, but here is a video of the tour. The second video is the couple at the beginning I met today when they auditioned for an ABC show that they did make it on.

I marvel at those displays. They must start in July or just never take it down. I have a family friend not far from here that does this on his property. His neighbor allows him to do it. Sound and special effects, real hi-tech stuff. Me, I cant spend more than an afternoon doing the porch and a window or two.

He takes them down. He was talking about today how he has the ground marked where everything is supposed to go. He's 71 and said he's getting to old to do it. We said he should get some help and give them the plans, but he said he has nothing written down. It's all in his head. lol.

That's too bad. Communities grow up with that stuff. That will be missed.

He's a really fit looking 71. I told him I was going to tell him I hope I looked like he does when I'm 71, but then said I don't look that good now.

I don't know if it was that brand but we had a sled styled like that one. It got passed around the family over the years. For a long time, I was the youngest cousin so I wound up with the sled. I also was the third rider of my sister's 26" faded red bicycle. I acquired it when I was about 10 years old and it was way too big for me. I eventually got a 24" second hand bike I enjoyed for many years.
