Detector rigs were made for vacation trips. So far I'm finding pennies 4" down dating in the 70's. One interesting tone was on an old path. There was an old rotting cedar stump in the middle of the path that I picked up an alum/copper tone in the roots. The stump I'm guessing is going back to mid 1960s since cedar is so durable. So I dug down 6" and started picking up a pinpointer tone. I was excited for this one. Pffft, it was a buried clump of ancient tinfoil. Oh well, interesting nonetheless.

Tin foil and pull tabs, the bane of many a detectorist. You can tweak your controls to eliminate finding those but the problem is that that is usually the range where you find gold.
Hang in there, there are many treasures to be found. Just wait till you hit your first pocket spill and you start pulling multiple targets out of the same hole.

I have the settings tuned about right for what I'm doing. This fall I will go over the yard again having dug most of the nails. I'm sure there will be more nails but perhaps the silver will tone. I have the discrimination set to reject Fe/nails and it really does well at that setting.
Had a good midrange tone near the sidewalk last night. About 3" deep was a 1982 dime. To me, no biggie, just 10cents. I googled it and found there was an error version missing the mint stamp. Some of those dimes are significantly valuable, like 50,000$ in proper condition. Alas, mine had a "p" mint stamp. Lesson learned.
Dig the tone, they say. I try to envision a nice Indian Head penny hiding in a bunch of nails like this, but not tonight. This is one hole in my backyard approach off the alley that gave a strong midrange tone even with ferrous metals disc'd out. Welp, here's why...
16" hole:
Out in the alley again, this is what I found. It's a genuine something or other. Judging by the rust, it's definately iron and currently soaking in Oxalic Acid. I may know more tomorrow.

I was on the beach this week and found a Hot Wheels car, also some beer tabs, bottle caps and miscellaneous scrap.
Love my knockoff cheapie amazon detector. Have not been out much with it lately so today was a return to fun work. The tone indicated "penny/copper" (this is in my back alley near the shop doors). Looks like a broach in copper setting so I searched and found nothing of glass or simulated gemstones. Anyways, on the other side there are little "minute" marks that indicate perhaps a compass or clock. Who knows but score a victory for finding something other than nails.
