I started with a Garrett Ace 300 and then I got a Fisher F2 because it was a little lighter for me. They're both great detectors it's just personal preference.
I just checked and they don't make the Fisher F2 anymore, they've upgraded to the F22 model.

You will also absolutely appreciate having a pinpointer too, it makes things sooo much easier. I have this one which is totally waterproof.

BTW, all my purchases have been through the KellyCo company, when you phone in your order they really work with you and usually wind up giving you a discount or throwing in some freebies too.

I haven't seen anyone using a metal detector in years. Guess I'm not in the right places. I think it would be fun. Where are the best places? I would imagine a sandy beach would be good. When my daughter was on her honeymoon in Hawaii, she lost her wedding ring in the surf. They put the word out to a local metal detector guy and after some searching in the approximate place she lost it, he found it! Frankly, I think prayer had as much to do with it as metal detecting, but then God used the guy to answer our prayers.

You will always find something no matter where you metal detect, even in your own backyard. Some of my favorite local spots are near basketball hoops, tot lots and curb strips between the sidewalk and street where people get in and out of cars often.
Beaches are great places but they're usually hit pretty hard. However I know a guy who goes on vacation to Hawaii every few years and metal detects while there. He has a saltwater fully submersible metal detector and finds so much that he says it pays for those vacations and then some. I've seen his hauls and believe him, lots of gold jewelry as well as good amounts of platinum which isn't very common to find here.

We have a company in Traverse City called "Ring Finders" for just that purpose. Big stuff in our area.

The expectation for non-ferrous is pretty high for my yard being I'm the first to do this EVER and the lot is over 110yrs old. The token that was dug up last year plus the tax stamp from NC state circa 1900 really has my attention.

But no way, that will happen because it's something I have always wanted to do as a part of studying history.
Here is what I ordered (gets good reviews from Quarter Hoarder)
Amazon deal. Omma MD10P

Yep. I did a multi-day beach search and then put it up for "just in case".
