Rainbow Reef in Key Largo. But you could do the pool work near you and then the place you do it at would take a trip somewhere for your open water dives. Lanier and Allatoona may be considered open water dives too. Not sure you have to do it in the ocean.

How deep are you certified for?

For basic open water diving the limit is 60 feet. Although I probably never dove over 35 feet or so during certification.

That's the same as us. We didn't do our open water in nearly as exciting of a place as you though. We did ours in a rock quarry.

Ah. Well we vacation in Venice FL a couple of times a year (my wife's GM has a condo on the beach there) and it's only 4 hours away from Key Largo. After seeing that one of the dive shops in Venice drove to Key Largo for the open water dives (I hadn't realized it was that close to us), I had always wanted to see coral reefs, so I thought why not just get the certification there. Violá. :)

The pool work was supposed to be over two days, but I did the stuff so quick we did it in one in about 2 1/2 hours. So pool work Tuesday morning, then open water dives 1 and 2 that afternoon, then open water dives 3 and 4 on Wednesday.

So in Venice they dive off the coasts for the big fossil shark teeth. Venice is the 'shark's teeth capital of the world'. Tons of fossil beds. I'll do that when we come back next May.

"Thomasville, NC An old rock quarry serves as an unexpected yet perfect setting for all types of scuba divers. Beginners can learn the ropes and expert divers come from surrounding states to see sunken boats cars and even a 50 foot Navy Ship!"

How does a Navy Ship wind up in a rock quarry?

Well for cryin' out loud you'd better have a metal detector with you this time...there's lots of gold off shore:

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say they put it there. same as the helicopter. But if you want to think there was a natural catastrophe that lifted that puppy up and deposited it in the quarry....well....by all means.
