They claimed to a mystified control tower that the unidentified object appeared to be a man seated in an aluminum lawn chair with a pistol in his hand, cruising along at 16,000 feet.
They were absolutely correct — the UFO was 33-year-old Larry Walters, fulfilling a childhood dream which ultimately took his life — but not in the way one may initially think. "When he went up into the clouds, and heard engines of planes, and he couldn't see them, and they couldn't see him, he went 'oh my goodness,'" the lawn chair-riding pilot's fiancé later told a UPI reporter.
It was the understatement of 1982, and possibly the decade...

I was there 1981-83,,, I can't remember much news from back then, so I can't say. I read the States & Stripes newspaper sometimes and Armed Forces radio I listened to in the mornings, but mainly to hear the Chicken Man (I think was name of it) episodes show, while doing are morning chores.

Chicken Maaaan! He's everywhere, he's everywhere!
I think it was '83 when the Korean air liner was shot down. We went on full alert. MPs went through the beer tents at the ongoing fest in Nuremberg telling all military personnel to report to their units.
We thought that this was it, WWIII starting.
Where were you at, and what did you do?

I was a 13 Bravo Gun Bunny, drove this Gore Ammo hauler while I was there, shot the M109 one Graf. Was on the E-5 list when I left. They sent me back to Ft. Sill. My number came down while I was on leave before I reported in for my E-5. Did 5 Graf's & a Reforgger deal. I reported in April of 83 after a 60 day leave.
The day I got back here I got back in touch with a guy I was stationed with at Sill, he had found me on Facebook. I had tried to find him a long time, finally happened, got to talk to him on the phone, was like it was yesterday. Lol, He was a 13 Echo I think the MOS was, but he called down the fire missions to my gun. When I had got out he still had 2 more years left, he told me I was the fastest gunner he'd ever called a fire mission to his whole time in. I had a good crew so that helped that happen. My first born was born at Ft. Sill. John Baker was his name he was married and had 2 kids. He got stationed in Korea after Sill. He lives up by the Great Lake in Ohio. I've got 6 fiends on Facebook I was stationed with in Germany as friends.
