Do you remember three on the tree?
I learned on one and hated it, way too much multi-tasking!

Yep. I had a Rambler station wagon my dad bought me that had it. Hated it too. I'd forget I had a stick and would wonder why the car would stall out when I went to go and it was still in 3rd. lol.

Over the years I have tried but never really mastered a stick. I'd kill the engine at a red light and then go into panic mode. We have had several second cars over the years with a stick and I did best with a VW. We never had a three on the tree but I did try one in a pick up once.
My motto : Auto, Power and Air!

3 on the tree was great as long as all the bushings weren't too worn on the steering column linkage. I converted at least one to 3 on the floor. You could buy floor shift kits back in the 70's and 80's for these.

Here in Norway we have mostly cars with manual gearboxes. Automatics are more expensive. It's mostly not a problem except when one is unfamiliar with the car, then ending up in the wrong gear when shifting up or down can be a real problem.

Going from 1 to 4 instead of 2 for instance. The alignment of the top and bottom often differs a lot between various cars. The R isn't easily accessible and requires for instance pulling up or down on the handle to access it.
Mishandling the clutch pedal can be an even bigger problem on an unfamiliar car.

I never had any trees in my autos. All I had were steering posts.
I never had any trouble with a clutch except for a School bus I drove and it was a little difficult.
