I read a post today where someone was talking about how to properly dispose of an old or damaged Bible. Is there a proper protocol for this, how would you do it?

Paper recycle bin
I would just keep it.
I had a leaking roof on my shed, a whole lot of books including some Bibles are ruined, not salvagable, and I wonder too. I always heard to burn them by themself out of honor. I don't know...
This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
(Ephesians 4:17-18)
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...

If it's no longer readable, just toss it. Or recycle. The book itself isn't "holy." The Word is the living Word on the pages. The literal pages are just paper and ink. I don't mean to suggest we be careless about our Bibles, but when it's definitely past usability, I see nothing wrong with recycling or burning or just tossing it. Our reverence is for the Word, not the paper and ink. I'm open to hearing arguments to the contrary, though. You might change my mind.

To make it special you can pour oil on it and set it on fire as a sacrificial offering.

I donate Bibles that are still serviceable to a church that participates with this organization. I have heard that Bibles beyond repair should be burned or buried. I don't see it as worshipping a book, I just see it as being respectful.
Local Charity Seeks Bibles, Religious Books
This is a very old link but as far as I can find out, the Gleaners are still sending Bibles.
