Good luck finding a bookcase that isn't pressed wood. (I had to look that word up...I could have sworn it was presswood. siiiigh....my southern is showing again)
We finally found a couple of bookcases at Costco that fit the bill, even though they weren't completely solid wood.
I love to find artwork that is beautiful AND cheap. I've gone to the starving artists' sale a couple of times and found a few originals that I really liked. We do have a couple of reproductions, and prints, but I prefer original water color, oils, etc.
(good grief I sound pretentious...not intentional. I just like to have something that the artist actually spent time crafting with their own hands. Not to mention they have more depth than a print)

Lista, I agree with you about the pressed wood. I suppose one of those might work if it was super cheap - a dollar or 2, lol - but I really dislike the stuff, and dh absolutely HATES it. When he was in school, he made some lovely furniture in shop, but that has long since either been sold or given to our son. If he had the equipment, I'd try to talk him into making me a bookcase. Although, if we did find one at a good price, it might cost less to buy it than to make one.

That's usually the way it works. Same thing with making your own clothes
