I was never much for sweet names for people, period, other than my child. Mr C is not a flowery speaker. However, the older I get, the more I use hon with clerks and food servers. I most often use it following thank you. It has become such a part of that phrase, I've said "thank you, hon!"before I even realize it .
I also use the "Bless his/her/your heart!" some.
Dd lived in the north for almost a year some while back. She wasn't keen on their abruptness.
The thing about southern sugar sloppin', is that most of us mean it sincerely.

We don't hear it up in the North that much. Personally I kinda like it but I do know that some ladies can't stand it especially if its coming from a guy, they take it as condescending and sometimes downright creepy...and sometimes depending on the guy they're right.

I never say those things to women. If you want to experience it though, go to any Waffle House.

Reminds me of the Norwegian "snuppeluppa". Norwegians don't use terms like that any longer and if they do, they get in trouble.

To answer the question: Yes....sometimes. A lot of times when a waitress calls me, "sweetie" or "honey" or "hon", I'll answer back by teasingly saying, "Yes, sugarplum, I'd like the (whatever)".

I generally don't call adults by those names, but if I'm talking to a child and I can't remember their name I will invariably call them sweetie or honey. If it's an adult I will say ma'am or sir...whether they're older than me or not.
