Our mobile home park is all on one water line. We are well trained in the water in the tub routine for when the water is off.
We are always ready with supplies for tornadoes or ice storms. If possible, we try to replace anything we really need before we run out. That would be daily needs stuff, milk etc.
We do use a camp stove in the house when we have no electricity for an extended period. We don't use it for heat, just cooking.

Yup, thats what happened during Hurricane Ivan, as the water main broke.

So, it's never the hurricane that gets people hurt, it's the stuff they do before and after the hurricane.
Fear is a powerful thing.
I remember getting the last plywood at Home Depot 3 days before Ivan hit.
As far as a crazy story...
At the local Walmart, tension was high as people were in a panic for water and stuff. A race riot almost broke out as one person cut into the line. As the conversation between the two arguers intensified, I told myself, I think I am about to hear the N-word in about 5-4-3-2-1... As soon as it came out, the fisticuffs started and everybody jumped in, but I think most were just trying to break the fight up and stop these two from killing each other. I can imagine things like this happening more once things get really serious someday.

Yes. People have a tendency to self police, deal with jerks on the spot. The last water incident I saw was at CVS, some guy was trying to buy all the case water 3 at a time (the limit), he was coming in, going out, coming in .. AND bragging that he was selling it down the street for a LOT more. The cashier shut him down so he started to make a ruckus, talking about his "rights", but I think he thought better of it when he looked around and saw the icy stares coming his way from the rest of us in line, he knew he was done, he left.

There is a time coming where this behavior will increase, but we could see that break out at Walmart any Friday night.
