The first day of Summer is the worst day of the year!!!
Since it's the longest day of the year that means the days start getting shorter tomorrow! On a downhill slide to winter!!!
On the other hand, that would make the first day of Winter the best day of the year. Since it is the shortest day, that means the day after the days will start getting longer.

I used to live north of the arctic circle, at 70 N. We were very happy about our summers, especially days when the temperature reached 60 F or more. Summers were incredibly different from winters. Not because of the temperature but because the sun was up 24 hours a day during summer and not at all for several months during winter. That is life close to the North Pole.

One of my most memorable childhood experiences was walking along the Alta river on a warm summer night (60 F or so). It must have been about 1 AM and it was twilight. We were picking wild redcurrants and the vegetation there was quite lush. That was in 1981 and 6 years later the area was gone because they built a controversial hydropower plant that dammed that area.

That would take some getting used to for me. Having months of darkness is depressive to the well-being. Probably why alcoholism and suicides are prolific in those places.
