    I don't think alcoholism is very prolific in Northern Norway, nor suicide. In Russia (in general) and among eskimos maybe but I don't know if that has anything to do with winter darkness. Living on the arctic archipelago of Svalbard at 80 N is worse, most people have problems with living there on a permanent basis because of the extreme winter darkness and the fact that most of the year has temperatures below freezing. Living at the South Pole station is even much worse.

    My wife and I were having this very same discussion on our date night last week.... We thought about moving to the South Pole but where would we put the deck furniture.....

    Just outside the station building. They have this thing about doing hot saunas then running around outside in -100 F afterwards. In the pitch dark, necessarily. You'd last at least 30 seconds in your deck furniture, I'm sure.
