Yes, that made me sad. There are two of them in a cage about a mile off shore of Okinawa. The smaller fish come and go but the whale sharks are trapped. They circle endlessly in an octagon shaped cage about 100 feet on a side. I was already somewhat irritated with the dive staff because the gear I rented was sub-standard. It was also a difficult dive because the staff also did very odd things. One guy added air to my dive vest three times, making it nearly impossible to keep neutral buoyancy. He snuck up behind me and grabbed my controls when I wasn't looking. I think he thought he was helping me but actually he was making my dive far less enjoyable. I wanted to smack him but I was rapidly on my way to the top of the net before I could regain control. Rapid ascent is one of the things all divers try to avoid. It can break your eardrums or cause decompression sickness.
