So I flew to St Augustine...and then St Simons Island last week... (plenty of pics)
...doing my long cross country for my commercial pilot's license. Some of you know I have been a private pilot with an instrument rating for many years. I decided I was going to get my commercial single engine license, which allows you to be hired to fly. The flight has to have one leg at least 250NM from the point of origin. St Augustine is 255NM from where we flew from. Couple of reasons. One is just doing something that keeps you proficient flying. Another would be that if anything happens to fall in my lap about flying for pay, then I'll be able to do it. After I do this I'll do the multi-engine add on for the commercial that would allow me to be hired to fly multi-engine planes.
Here are a few pics from the trip. Pretty cloudy, so we filed IFR (Instrument Fight Rules, where we could legally fly through the clouds). Had a really thick overcast leaving St Simons going back to Covington GA where we flew from. It was fun climbing through it then a beautiful view flying on top of the clouds.
This is the plane. A Mooney 201 200hp single engine 4 seat plane. Complex plane, which means it has retractable gear and a constant speed prop, which you have to use for the commercial checkride.
Beginning of the trip to St Augustine. Somewhat cloudy.
These are flying up the coast from St Augustine FL to St Simons GA. That is out the front and left window.
At St Simons we ate at Souther Soul BBQ which has been on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives.
Then back to Covington. Solid overcast on the way back. We're at 6000 ft.
And some break in the clouds almost home.
Pick of the panel while flying. First pic shows some thunderstorms off our left a few hundred miles away.
Finally from a site where you can track flights, that shows our 3 legs. Covington to St Augustine, St Augustine to St Simons, St Simons back to Covington.

That's a nice plane too. Good traveling machine. Speed of about 160 knots or so (185 miles per hour).

It sure looks nice from the picture. You said "we" in the OP... do you need an instructor with you, or was Mrs. Fuego along for the ride and the fantastic looking food?

I had an instructor. It's his plane and he won't let any pilot fly it solo due to insurance. But I sat left seat and did all the flying. I could have rented a fixed gear and done it by myself, but I wanted to do it in the complex since that's what I'll have to do the flight test with.

By the way, that plate of food was $10. Cheaper for a BBQ place like that. Here in Atlanta that would have cost $14-$15. That was a ton of pulled pork they put on the plate. Plus 2 sides that come with it. Got Brunswick stew and brisket chili.

Excellent show and tell on both the flight and the pulled pork.
Were you nervous at all, did you mess up on anything? How come you didn't video any of it like you did with the scuba diving?

What does the flight test consist of...and when will you actually get the new license? Big congrats!

Nah. I wasn't nervous.
It consists of an oral exam with a DPE (designated pilot examiner) covering commercial topics. Then a flight test that consists of a few different typed of take offs and landings, and some maneuvers unique to the commercial such as chandelles, lazy eights, eights on pylons, 360 degree steep power turns, power off 180 degree landing. You don't have to do them all I don't think though. They pick a few. I'm more concerned about the oral than the flying. I've done a knowledge dump from not flying over the past several years. I really need to study for that.
I'd get the temporary license right after I passed the test. The guy would give it to me. Plastic permanent one would come in the mail.
I do have videos and was going to post them, but don't know how to post them. Photobucket decided they will hold everybody hostage for payment, so I can upload there, and I don't have a Youtube account to upload them too and post here.

Fly over for a meal
Pick up Nikos along the way and if he gives you any trouble use the ejector seat over the Indian Ocean
