Local Butcher Shop hangs animal-rights sign under duress to stop protests
    By Natalie Orenstein Aug. 2, 2017, 8 a.m.

Reminiscent of the "smoking kills" labels on packs of cigarettes, a sign denouncing the killing of animals now hangs, counterintuitively, in the window of a North Berkeley butcher shop.

The owners of The Local Butcher Shop on Cedar Street agreed, under duress, to put the sign up in exchange for a promise by animal-rights activists to stop holding weekly demonstrations in front of the store.

The Bay Area chapter of the national non-profit Direct Action Everywhere has protested — sometimes half-naked and covered in fake blood — while butchery classes are in session every Sunday since April. The group, which is also known as DXE, says it will only hold two more protests if the new sign, which says, "Attention: Animals' lives are their right. Killing them is violent and unjust, no matter how it's done," stays up for the next year.

Monica Rocchino, who owns The Local Butcher Shop with her husband and former Chez Panisse chef Aaron Rocchino, said she considers the deal extortion....

Bowing to pressure, a Berkeley butcher shop makes a deal with vegan protesters

The protests were intense: People dripping with fake blood, tightly bound in plastic wrap as if they were cuts of meat. Singing, shouting, lecturing customers. It's what Direct Action Everywhere, an animal rights group, would do every time the Local Butcher Shop would host its butchering classes in its Berkeley, Calif., store.

But after four months, the protests have finally slowed down, and for an unlikely reason: After receiving a list of demands from the group, which also goes by DXE, the butcher shop capitulated. Although the Local Butcher Shop touts its farms' humane practices on its website, owners agreed to hang a sign in their window that reads "Attention: Animals lives are their right. Killing them is violent and unjust, no matter how it's done."....

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...

Well a vegetarian I know gave another person that 'compassion' answer about not eating meat, and I told her she was 'throwing shade' at the other person by that remark. Well she said that wasn't her intent, but I said it doesn't matter your intent, it implies that the other person isn't compassionate, a typical vegetarian slight kind of remark. She said that if someone took it that wan then they are insecure. I said I take it that and I'm not insecure at all. I like me and not ashamed of it. Anyway, we got into a big 'discussion' about that. lol.

Did you tell her Adam's first clothes were animal skins?

If she didn't mean it that way, you should accept her word and move on. Truth be told, I wonder if sometimes I don't convey to my vegan daughter a sense of moral superiority by allowing myself to eat meat without regret. I don't mean to, of course, but some people might misunderstand it in the same way you're misunderstanding her intent.

    Honey?

There is a difference between vegetarians and vegans. Vegans are more radical and are cultish in their attitudes

I can to a degree understand people being vegetarians

    My response to vegans

    1. They are deluded

    2. I belong to PETA - People Eating Tasty Animals

    3. Pull out the dry bacon I carry in my pocket for times of emergency

    4. If they are believers I would say Jesus ate meat and he is a million times more compassionate than you... then poke out my tongue
