Keep in mind that we Christians own nothing. We are stewards of what God gives us. It's in our own best interest to become a channel of blessing to others by letting God's gifts flow through us to others. When you relinquish ownership of what you have, and commit it all to the Lord, you can give more freely.

Here is another verse to consider.

Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed (Proverbs 19:17).

That's something I'm not physically able to do. If Redeemed is not able to give to her neighbor, then that's a different story.

A further thought: You said she has kids. Can you suggest to her that you work out an agreement where you trade with each other? Can her kids do yardwork for you? Can she sew for you?

I think you got the point though. Someone could beg you to hand over everything you have, have 100 people tell you to walk a mile with them until you drop etc. The possibilities are endless with a literal interpretation.

So if Jesus wasn't speaking literally, what was His point? Even if He meant it figuratively, do you not see an application to Redeemed's situation? Scripture is full of references to our responsibility to those we have the means of helping and who ask for our help.

If you do indeed affirm that he does then please hand over all your assets, demonstrate that you really believe that. Psalm 119:160 says that the sum of his word is truth, that would include statements made elsewhere including by Paul in his epistles.

Jesus often rebuked the Jews for caring only about their own, one of his points was that everyone is our neighbor and noone is completely undeserving of our attention.

Bookman is right on target. We are to give when we can. If we are not able then no. If you have ever been without and not enough to make it you would understand this lady. Whether sweet or not has nothing to do with the scriptural injunction. My Bible says to bless your enemies. We are give and we are not to expect the lady to do anything for you in return.

I am shocked at the reactions to this. Some of your need to check out you supply of compassion.

Well, I feel like I have "handed over" my assets. All I have belongs to Him. I try to be a channel through which God blesses others. I make mistakes I'm sure, but I will say that in our small fellowship of believers, we all try to see that no one in our congregation goes without having their needs met. That's the way the church should function, in my opinion. In an ideal church world, no Christian would be on welfare or need to rely on government help.

That involves stewardship on your part, not simply handing it all over to whoever asks. Giving all you have to Jesus is different to giving all you have to anyone who has figured out your literal interpretation of some of Jesus' statements. What do you think would have happened if immediately after Jesus made those statements someone had tag teamed asking him to walk a mile with them until he had dropped ? Or to hand over and keep handing over every coin in their money box ? He would have told them that he didn't mean it that way, obviously.
