    Wells Fargo

I've decided that letting everyone know about Wells Fargo's lousy customer service is now a mission of mine.

As you all know, my husband passed away on November 4th. He had a couple of accounts at Wells Fargo, that he had had before we got married. This would include our mortgage. Unfortunately, Andy did not have a will, so everything that was in his name alone will go into probate. Here's the kicker....you have to list the monetary value of everything for the court probate proceedings. BUT I CAN'T DO THAT without Wells Fargo giving me the info on how much more is owed on the house. They are refusing to give me ANY information without some sort of official notification. Meaning I have to pay a lawyer more money to go to court and get that kind of notification. Not only will they not give me the information, the lady that I spoke to here at my local branch was simply atrocious. Here are a couple of the things she had to say to me, "We cannot give you any information on any of Andrew's accounts. If he had wanted you to have any information he would have listed you on the accounts. You'll have to get your lawyer to send the proper paperwork." and finally, "Did you think you were going to just waltz in here, and we would hand over all his information?"

To top it off, I just found out that his 401k is with Wells Fargo as well. I nicely called up, explained the situation, and they pleasantly told me how to proceed. THEN I get a call from someone saying that I needed to send them either by fax or mail a copy of the death certificate, MY driver's license, and MY social security card. Anyone else see this as a serious threat to identity theft?! I convinced them to let me give them the ss# over the phone, but I just now got another call saying that they were looking into the matter to see if that would be acceptable.

Please...whatever you do...don't bank at Wells Fargo.

After my mom passed last year we found that we needed numerous copies of her death certificate. Everyone we contacted needed a copy. Even now as we're selling her house almost two years later, the escrow company needs a copy of her death certificate. Fortunately our lawyer at the time told us to request at least a dozen copies. My MIL has an account at Wells and she has complained about their lousy customer service too. Praying you have an easy resolution to all this.

That's the thing Bookie...I HAD a copy of the death certificate with me when I went into the local branch office, and they still refused to give me information. This last event is just that they want a copy of the certificate, my driver's license AND my social security card sent all together. That's just so dangerous.

I hear ya, Sis - But pretty much everything we do with our personal info is risky these days...We went thru similar challenges when both (Hubby and me) our Moms passed.

Go ahead and give them what they want, so you can get these issues resolved, and if you don't have it, maybe you want to look into creating a Lifelockā„¢ account - That way, at least you'll be notified if anyone attempts to steal your identity.

I have an account with Wells Fargo (for my freelance writing earnings), and since their most recent "mess-up," they've been bending over backwards to make sure I'm pleased with their customer service.

See if you can get an email to the President/CEO of the company and let him or her know how you were treated - Especially in light of the fact that you're a grieving widow.

    They should be ashamed!!!

EDITED TO ADD: Oh, and do you mind if I say this is another reason we should all have a Will made? It doesn't have to be anything "formal," just make sure you get several copies of it notarized - My MIL's was hand-written, but since it was notarized, the county clerk accepted it, and it eliminated a lot of wasted time and $$$$ when we had to handle her estate and wrap up her affairs.

Romans is right, I went thru similar things when my mom and an Uncle passed even tho I was their POA and executor of their estates per wills, there are just certain legal hoops you have to jump thru to properly settle things but at least with a will you can avoid probate.

However, this part was uncalled for and just plain rude:

I helped my mom with her aunt's estate. She was the executrix of the estate and here in OK, she also had to have the legal papers showing that she was the court appointed personal representative of the estate as well as death certificates. Mom died before the estate was settled and the attorney asked if I would take over to do the final work. I declined. Mom's estate was easy, but I hope I don't have to do any others! This was several years ago in a simpler time. All financial institutions were local entities.

I am so sorry you are having these added stresses. Those are very rude things to say to you under any circumstances!

That's some company culture, 5300 employees involved in the same scam.

I'd travel on their stage coach though, if there aren't too many arrows stuck in it.
