Being an instructor, I am of course a big proponent of additional education. I do think when it comes to pastoring...really the Lord can give you all you need, BUT what would it hurt to have some formal training to go along with it?

I totally agree. I have seen men and women greatly blessed in ministry who had minimal education. They have a God given talent or ability to work with people and to lead them. But most of us need to learn and study and discipline ourselves. Education at the right school can be of tremendous help. I believe that the school must be an institution strong in the studies presented. There are certain professors that are better than others to study under. Some of them I had greatly inspired me and encouraged me in my calling.

I have no problem with education. I think the problem is more what kind of education. Seminaries are academic institutions, where the emphasis is placed on making academic theologians. What the Church needs are pastor/theologians. Individuals who are given a firm foundation of Biblical theology AND mentoring as a pastor. I have seen two newer schools where you train online for the academics, and are in a Church being trained and mentored by a experienced pastor. Of course none of this matters unless the person is open to being taught by the Holy Spirit. I just don't see why being open and taught by the Holy Spirit cannot also include a formal education.
Does one need an M.Div to be a pastor, no. Can one be affective being schooled by the Holy Spirit, yes. But, there are dangers when a degree is "the requirement" just as there is when one says I have the Bible and the Holy Spirit and don't need anything else. Remember, God created us with minds and intellect, as well as a spirit.

Men (and women) have been studying the Bible for 2000 years. That represents a lot of accumulated knowledge. To me, it makes more sense to build upon the work of previous generations than to "start from scratch".

In fact, just by reading the Bible in a current language, you are building upon the work of the linguistic experts who have diligently translated, word-by-word, the ancient languages in which the Bible was written.

He does have a formal education and from what I remember a bit more than what I have which is one year in a Pentecostal/Charismatic Bible school. He probably finished his before I was born.
