Do you think it would have been strange to have a RC funeral for your brother seeing that he was a self proclaimed atheist ?

Yep I would have which is why when things were being said I sided with what my brother wanted.

We had mum's funeral in May and now our brothers. One of my early questions when we first knew he was sick was could we use the same grave as there are time restrictions between burials in some places.

Anyway that was OK. But both times when we went to the funeral directors the first thing I did was tell them I was a celebrant then tell them which of us was the executor of mum's then my brother's will, that way they don't have to ask should there be differing views on somethings because they have legal responsibilities to follow too.

When I think about it of course most executors are family members and would therefore have a say.
My brain went on a tangent for some reason.

Fortunately I have never had atheist issues when I have performed funerals

I have married non religious people and in every occasion they have allowed me to pray a blessing on their marriage and use scripture during the service. I use some gentle persuasion telling them marriages need all the help they can get...it works for me

I was wondering that also...and if there were any children what their religious persuasions were.

I guess the only comfort is as you noted, God gives all of us free will to choose and as I believe calls everyone at some point...so sorry for your loss..

There was prayer for him and he had a visitor in hospital keen to convert him. Left his personal Bible with him in the end and we were worried we'd lost it when he asked for it back.
