    Ancestry.com DNA tests

Anybody ever done this? I got to watching some Youtube videos of people about their results, and it's really interesting. They break it down in detail. For instance if a certain percentage is African, they break down the region(s) of Africa you are from like west/east Africa, and even the country. Same with European or whatever.

I saw a video of Jessica Alba learning from George Lopez on his show, and you could tell she was really disappointed that she was mostly white (European). From the conversation it seems she might have fancied herself to be more native American than she is, and possible 'Spanish'. Also just watching other videos and people breaking down what they are.

I think I'm gonna have to do it.

p.s. If you have done it, let's see the results. :)

I was told by a Professor in our genomics core not to bother, it's a waste of money because it really doesn't pin point where you are from, just a general region.

Well they do give specific areas from the general region. Such as 'European' is white. But they break it down as in 30% British; 15% western Europe; etc. But no, it doesn't tell you where you are from, but it does identify what percentage you are out of European, African, Asian or Native American. Every nationality falls under those 4. There is no 'hispanic' race or anything like that. Hispanics have a lot of native American, and are basically a mix. I'd just like to see how much European I am, and anything else that's in there out of curiosity (I've been told I have some African features at times in my younger days. ).

Watching the videos of people looking at their results 'live' on camera are good though. Many surprises. I found out that many blacks have been told they have native american in them by their parents, and it is a common belief among blacks that they have a lot of native american, but of all the ones I've watched none of them had any or just a percentage or two even though a parent told them that they had a grandmother or great grandmother that was full blooded Indian. You can tell they're really disappointed. Amazingly the black with the most native american was Snoop Dog, I think about 37%, and he was only 71% African. He and Charles Barkley were having a contest on who was 'blacker', and Charles won with 75%. lol.

One black girl, who's parent are black, found out she was over 50% white, which she said could not happen because of her parents. Come to find out it revealed that the man she thought was her real dad wasn't. That one was kinda sad. Of all the blacks and whites I've watched, blacks seem to have more mix than whites. Of the whites I watched all of them were almost 100% european. I did see a few blacks that were 90% or so, but most in the 70-85% range African.

Anyway, it's interesting watching the videos and the reactions. Generally of the videos I watched, the most nervous were the blacks. It seems they were concerned about not being as black as they thought they were. lol. Speaking of that, one of the hosts on 'The Real' (they did all the hosts) apparently thought she was more black than she was. She ended up being only 7% African and I think close to 60% European. Just put in ancestry dna test in Youtube and you'll get lots of hits.

I'm curious too, but I'd hate to waste $100 or more on a test that is less than accurate according to many people.

You go first, Fuego, and let us know what you think.

Compared to these 100% Africans, most Americans should understand that they are nowhere near simply by gauging their actual skin color.
Granted, there are lighter skinned Africans but most of the American genes are from Western Africa where the skin color is similar.

    I'm gonna do it.

Well, I think generally speaking, it gives you an idea. It may not be exact, but I think it's at least in the ballpark.

Some of the blacks though, it did surprise me that a few of them were more % African than I would have thought from their skin color.
