When I married the first time I received my mother's fine china, so I only registered for everyday china.

    Mikasa city gem

The fine china is: Noritake, Fairmont

I now just buy my everyday "china" from Costco. That way I don't feel bad if something gets broken, and with kids....something ALWAYS gets broken.

I use the fine china only a couple of times a year, but I DO try to use it a couple of times, so that I can appreciate it.

Very pretty! I broke my way through my first stoneware and some grocery store china. I've now had my Corelle for 21 years and not a broken one yet. I'm still using the stainless flatware that I got at the gas station, one place setting per purchase before I was married. We will celebrate 42 years in May.

As a younger man, I observed that my parents had several fine sets of china that they rarely used, and when they did use them, they were afraid to put them in the dishwasher as they believed that the decoration would be damaged. In addition, they had to reserve cabinet space for these items. I vowed to never repeat this.

So I just use simple white china that I can purchase one-item-at-a-time. To me, the quality is high enough; it feels sturdy and washes well. And if an item breaks, I just go back to the store and by a replacement item. I don't have to buy an entire set.

That's a great idea! If I had known then that I would never use the china, I would have saved my money.

Nice. And they're so different from each other. Do you have a split personality?

It's nice getting to see each of your china. Tells so much about your personalities. When I got married in 1975 it was popular to get pottery and not China. My mom and grandmother thought I would want China and that I really should have China. My mom gave me a beautiful set of China she bought over a period of time for me.

A few years ago she gave me her white China with a gold rim that she had used for years. It was in perect condition and I loved it. Only problem was the plates were small. It was astounding how different we eat these days to have such big plates.

My stemware was smoke brown colored Franciscan crystal. It was chunky heavy and went with my pottery.

Now, my daughter has it and loves it, 40 years later it has circled back around.
