    San francisco trip

I have no clue where that other thread went, so I'm starting a new one.

So...California peeps....where are the closest Sequoias to San Francisco? My Mom seems to think that there is a Sequoia that has a 2 lane road running through it, but I don't see it.

    Help?

If you're just in SF and nearby, I'd suggest Muir Woods

If you have time, you can drive a couple hours south to Santa Cruz and see Henry Cowell State Park or if you can drive five hours north to the heart of the Redwoods in Humboldt County. Take the old Highway 101 when you see the sign going up the new 101.

For the Sequoia's, you want to to go Sequoia Natl Park. It's a good 4 hour drive from SF.
It's just above Visalia CA in the Central Valley of CA. The trees are massive!

If you decide to drive there, I recommend a few things:
    1) be very careful when you leave SF. You could end up in traffic for 3 hours or more.
    2) Yosemite Natl is very close to Seq. natl park. You might as well visit there too, but again, the traffic getting into the park in spring and summer is unbearable. Get in line at the crack of dawn or you'll be sorry

The Redwoods are mostly north of San Francisco. I recommend visiting the Napa wine country while you're at it.
Again, be very strategic as to when you head out from the city. Do not leave til after 9:30a and get out by 1p

The official time for travel will be October of this year! I've got a tour guide book so I have all the stuff we want to do IN San Francisco...I'm just trying to work out the details for the "tree trip".

What are y'all's thoughts on this? As of right now, we'll fly into San Francisco, then get a rental car...drive to wherever the tree place is...stay the night, then come back the next day to spend the rest of the week in San Francisco. (oh...and return the rental car, and just use public transportation for the rest of the trip) Does that sound like a plan, or would there be a better airport to fly into?

I did exactly what Pentecali recommended years ago when my son was 1 and my husband traveled a lot and we got lots of frequent flier miles. Sadly, those days are long gone. We flew into San Fran and went to Sequoia and Yosemite. Stayed in a little cabin in Sequoia....just extraordinary. Wonderful time.

We also went into wine country but the trip along the coast made me so car sick, I couldn't focus on much of anything (we just drove through, didn't stop anywhere).

One place I would add to Pentecali's recommendations is Point Reyes State Park. Beautiful beach and we saw seals playing around very close to shore. Very neat place and great for a picnic.

We loved San Fran, but that was long before the homeless took over the city. Be VERY careful where you go as the homeless have somewhat taken over parts of the city. Chinatown was fascinating.....had great food at a restaurant there. Be sure to get a great meal in Chinatown if you can, and go into some of the local shops. Culture shock, but fun!

Are you wanting to visit Los Angeles & soCal too? If not, I would fly into Fresno,CA. Sequoia Natl Park is probably only an hour away. Yosemite is only about 50 miles from Fresno Airport

If you want to visit the Redwoods, I would recommend going to the Redwood Natl Forest. It's a good 300 miles north of San Francisco.

If you want to visit the Redwoods, I would fly into Sacramento. It will save you A LOT of hassle getting out of the San Fran area. If you arrive in San Francisco at the wrong times and head to the redwoods, you'll be sitting in traffic for hours. It could end up taking you 8 hours to get there.
On the way back to SF, you can stop by the Napa wine country ( Sonoma Co.) if you want, or some coastal spots, but you would be best to get into the San Fran area about 8:30p-9p.

Many years ago, on a summer business trip, I had only the evening free, so drove to Muir Woods. I thought it was great to be able to see such big and beautiful trees just a half hour out of the city.
