Francis Drake to most people was just a pirate. In reality he was a faithful man of God fighting for spiritual freedom in a bloodthirsty Catholic world.
Drake did more than just sink Spanish ships The following prayer is one of Drake's

Disturb us Lord, when we are too pleased with ourselves. When our dreams have come true because we dreamed too little. When we arrived safely because we sailed too close to the shore. Disturb us Lord, to dare more boldly. To venture on wider seas. Where storms will show your mastery; Where, losing sight of land, we shall find the stars. We ask you to push back the horizons of our hopes; And to push into the future, in strength, courage, hope and love. (SIR FRANCIS DRAKE 1577)

Drake's realtime active faith is an example to all believers.
I haven't personally sunk any realtime Catholic ships, but I enjoy sinking foolish religious theologies. And I also love to sail on the sea of faith, driven before the wind of the spirit.

Francis Drake was also a slaver, meaning he conducted military attacks on West African villages then sold the prisoners as slaves to Spanish plantations.

One of our famous historic hotels here is named after him. Very popular spot.
I never knew who he was until now.

True Colonel, true, but lets put Drake in the context of the right time period. The 1500s, not 2000s

Most black slaves were captured and sold by their fellow Africans.

African and middle eastern slave ships also raided Europe and southern England to capture white slaves, sometimes completely emptying whole townships into their slave ships.

English captives were also enslaved by Spain.

Despite being far smaller and weaker, England was in a war of survival with Spain.

Smuggling slaves was part of a very successful strategy to damage the Spanish American economy.

The Pope had given the New World to Spain to the exclusion of any other nation, particularly England. Any English merchant trying to sell in the Americas was liable to sinking or capture. Accusing Drake of piracy and theft because of his attacks on Spanish ships is a rather one sided viewpoint!

Many thousands of slaves were owned by the church right up to the abolition of slavery.

Francis Drake did actually attack West African villages, some times in collaboration with Africans, in order to capture Africans and sell them as slaves. He was also a privateer which is basically a legalized pirate. He would sell slaves to Spaniards then sink Spanish ships for England. He was certainly no hero but he seems to have been a somewhat religious man of the Protestant persuasion.
