We're going back into Mountain Standard Time tonight. So now Saskatchewan will be an hour ahead of us, Central Standard Time... and BC will be going back into Pacific Standard Time, an hour behind us. As far as I know, it was always a province by province decision. I would have thought that it was state by state for the US, too.

I found this about AZ on Wikipedia:

Unlike most of the United States, Arizona does not observe daylight saving time (DST), with the exception of the Navajo Nation, which does observe DST. The Hopi Reservation, which is not part of the Navajo Nation but is geographically surrounded by it, also does not observe DST. For this reason, driving the length of Arizona State Route 264 east from Tuba City while DST is in place involves six time zone changes in less than 100 miles (160 km).

    Reasoning
Because of Arizona's hot climate, DST is largely considered unnecessary. The argument against extending the daylight hours into the evening is that people prefer to do their activities in the cooler evening temperatures. The Navajo Nation, a semi-autonomous Native American territory, follows the United States DST schedule. It lies in northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, and southeastern Utah and thus maintains the same time throughout tribal lands despite state borders.

I can sort of understand AZ reasoning. The sun so intense.

I don't like it getting dark at 5:30p or 5:45p either.

I think the further north you go, the earlier it gets darker but I'm not too sure

Yup. We're already @5:37 pm sunset.

Tomorrow, back on Standard time, sunset will be @4:37PM.

By Dec 21, sunset is 4:03pm, sunrise @8:32AM for 7.5 hours of daylight.

    We're on the downhill stretch.

I'd prefer DST all year round, even though it's not light until late in the morning here. I think one of the arguments was, back in the day, that they didn't want kids walking to school in the dark. I don't think I ever see kids walking to school.... it seems everyone gets driven to and from school regardless of how close or far they are. I grew up walking one mile to school. You don't see that any more.

    Exactly.

It was a beautiful sunny day, the temps hit a high of 63 and I was outside trying to catch up on some yard work before winter rolls in but I had to stop an hour earlier than normal because it was dark already.

I couldn't deal with that much darkness. I need sunshine

It doesn't cause people to be gloomy and depressed?

Some people are affected by it. SAD. Season Affective disorder. Depression caused by not enough sunlight.

The problem with that is that it is too dark in the morning with kids getting on the school bus. Although I dislike the change (or, I should say my body does!) it was nice having light before 7:00 AM.
