By the way femme, was it you we were trying to get to watch Shawhank because you never had?
I like the original "Matrix" as well. The followups tried too hard to be cool. The original movie has a longing for truth, for an escape from the bondage of this world, for making a decision to do something entirely new and different.

One of Frank Capra's lesser-known films is one of my favorites: Meet John Doe, with Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck.

A reporter (Barbara Stanwyck) writes a fictitious column about someone named "John Doe," who is distraught at America's neglect of the little people and plans to kill himself. The newspaper then hires a ballplayer-turned-hobo (Gary Cooper) to pose as John Doe. In a series of radio addresses written by a publisher with fascist leanings, Doe captures the public's imagination. When he finally realizes he has been used, Doe comes to his senses and becomes the man he never knew he could be.

I also liked The Matrix a lot. The idea that we could be living under an illusion, and that many would prefer the illusion over reality - I found that very interesting.

But I didn't like the sequels.
