What Easter traditions did your family have when you were a kid?

Since I grew up in a mostly Slavic Catholic neighborhood, on Good Friday almost everything shut down between noon and 3 pm but the churches were open to come in to as priests were doing the Stations of the Cross. It was also a day of fasting (one meal or a couple small meals) and no meat.

On Saturday you could go to church or the church hall and bring a basket with some of your Easter dinner items and a priest would bless it.

On Easter Sunday the Catholic churches would be pretty packed as all good Catholics were expected to do their Easter Duty and attend Mass. Many who did not come regularly usually made it to the Easter Sunday services.

Kids would get their Easter baskets filled with goodies in the morning and then families would get all dressed up to attend the Easter Service. Afterwards there would be large family gatherings for a huge feast that usually included all the eggs the kids colored and at least one butter lamb.

Mom would get all us 5 kids motivated to get ready for Church. We put on our Sunday best stuff and went to the Easter service and go to Sunday school classes after the service. Think my Step-Dad went a few times on Easter. Then she would have a big meal when we got home. Then Easter baskets with all the goodies, then a Easter egg hunt in the mid afternoon.

Then the whole family would have movie night. What ever the local TV station would be playing that night. The Robe was a favorite of my Step-Dad I remember. Ben-Hur was usually playing on that day. The Ten Commandments was usually playing during that week too.

I was raised up going to Church (Methodist) every Sunday and doing special events, sang in the Children's Choir. When I turned 16 I faded out of doing that, but Mom still had Easter Dinner. Can't wait to see her again.

Amazing. My grandparents immigrated to Chicago from the Slavic region of Croatia. Diehard Catholic. My dad moved to Los Angeles with my uncle when he was 18. They both became Pentecostal and left the CatholicChurch. My grandfather completely disowned them and had a mock funeral with a coffin he was so mad.
I have a cousin who's a catholic priest in Chicago.

My mom use to make leg of lamb. I wouldn't touch it. I couldn't stand the smell of it. My dad would buy me a Big Mac and fries.

Of course our whole world was centered around church. Easter was a big deal, dressing up in new outfits, Sunday morning and Sunday night revival services. In fact, when the church ran revivals, we went 7 nights a week and that could go on for months.

Growing up pretty poor (in a Foster Home) - I always looked forward to Easter...

Somehow, my "Mom" would scrounge up enough money to buy us new clothes to wear to Church (once a year) - There was a nice dinner afterwards, and Easter Baskets were given out on "Easter Monday"

I loathed the Easter-Egg Hunt on Monday, because we wore our new shoes and clothes, and ran in the grass, dirt, and bushes, hunting for eggs...

I hated getting my nice clothes messy and covered in pollen, so I eventually stopped participating - I'd get scolded for being "stand-offish" but I didn't care - I'd just find a "clean" spot to sit and watch the other kids scramble for the eggs, while eating the goodies from my basket.

I really can't remember any traditions. We all went to church (not Daddy) and dress up. We also got our Easter baskets.
