Pasties
When I asked my son what he'd like to have to eat for his birthday he requested Pasties for dinner and Baklava for dessert. Even though both are labor intensive things to make - he's worth it so Pasties and Baklava is what he got!
Here's a picture from last night - of the pasties (meat and potato pie) that we had for dinner. The first picture fresh from the oven - the second picture it's cut open to show the inside. They were yummylicious!! My pie crust is all homemade - no store bought crust for us!

They were sooooo good!! My mom learned how to make them while she and dad held meetings in Upper Michigan in the '50's. They've always been a family favorite!

Hi Barrie - I make the pie crust and roll them to a round shape. In one half of the crust I put ground beef, diced potatoes, finely diced onions...salt, pepper, garlic salt, and onion powder. Then I fold the other half of the crust over the filling - crimp the edges and bake for an hour at 350 degrees. Depending on how large you make them you may have to bake a little longer or shorter. I watch for the crust to get golden brown and a knife inserted lets me know if the potatoes are done through.

You're welcome. Some people put diced carrots or diced rutabagas in there pasties but I stick with the meat, potato, and onions.

We have a large Scandinavian community in the U.P. that dates back to the 1800s when immigrants from there came in to mine, they're the ones that introduced pasties to the area. I never tried making those yet, you just may have inspired me.

They're delicious! If I have extra pie dough - I roll it out thin, cut it into squares, sprinkle liberally with cinnamon and sugar and then bake them! I love these little flaky cinnamon and sugar tarts! They're always a big hit with others too!
