    Baklava

My son asked me to make Baklava for his birthday sweet - no cake this year. Here's a couple of pictures of the finished product and my recipe, in case some of you might like to make some.

    Here's the recipe....

    Sandy's Baklava
    Baklava Recipe:
    30 sheets Filo dough
    1 - 1 1/2 sticks melted butter (I used 1 1/2)
1 1/2 cup finely chopped or ground nuts. You can use walnuts or almonds or pecans or I've even seen it with pistachios. You can do a mix of the nuts like 1 cup walnuts and 1/2 cup almonds. I used all pecans today because that's what I like and what I had.
    2 Tablespoons sugar
    1 Teaspoon cinnamon
    1/2 Teaspoon ground nutmeg
    dash of ground cloves.

    Syrup:
    1 cup sugar
    1 cup water
    1/2 lemon
honey - at least 2 Tablespoons and up to 1/4 cup - depending on how sweet you like your baklava.

Unroll the filo dough and cut it to fit a 9 x 13 glass pan,
cover the filo with saran wrap and damp paper towels to keep the filo from drying out while you work with it. Remember to put the wrap and towels back on each time you take a sheet of dough. The dough is very thin and will dry quickly if not covered - if it dries it will tear and then you'll have a mess.
    Mix nuts, sugar, and spices.
Brush the bottom of the pan with melted butter.
Lay 10 sheets of filo dough in the pan - brushing each sheet with melted butter.
Sprinkle half the nut mixture over the filo and drizzle with butter.
Lay 10 more sheets of dough, brushing each with melted butter and
spread the rest of the nut mixture on the dough and drizzle with melted butter.
Lay the final 10 sheets of filo dough - once again brushing each sheet with melted butter.
Cut - without cutting through - you can do diamond shapes or triangles like I did.
Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
Finish cutting through following the cuts you started before baking.
    Allow Baklava to cool.
Prepare syrup by boiling sugar, water, and 1/2 lemon for 15 minutes.
Remove the lemon and add the honey.
Pour warm syrup over the Baklava!
    Prepare to enjoy!!

Man, that looks labor intensive. You lay out all that filo sheet by sheet?

Those look soooo perfect! Do you make them often? I made them ONE TIME many years ago and while they tasted good they didn't look nearly as good as yours...and yeah, labor intensive. Thanks for sharing Sandy! :)

Hi Krys - no I don't make them often. They are too much work to do regularly! But.... my son wanted them for his birthday and he's so worth all the work it takes to make them!! I took a few pieces out and then I let him take the whole pan of them home with him!! I wanted to be sure he got all the baklava he could eat!!
