Pumpkin pie and sweet potato pie
Maybe it's just me but I've eaten both and even made both, but they taste very similar to me. Do you guys have a preference or notice a big difference?

OMG - Are you kidding me??!!
I grew up eating Sweet Potato Pie, and I decided to try a slice of Pumpkin, when I was all grown up and trying to develop a more "sophisticated palate" (LOL)...
Well, the Pumpkin tasted like it had medicine in it - I gagged and vowed never to try that nastiness ever again!
So, my short answer is: NO! - They do not taste the same, and there is no comparison.

But whoever heard of sweet potato spice scented candles?

Yeah, they're basically interchangeable for me. I'm not sure I could tell the difference really. But then again I don't think I've had that much pumpkin pie.
My daddy used to make a couple of sweet potato pies every few weeks and keep them in the fridge to eat for dessert after he ate something. I have no idea where he got that idea from. lol. I miss him though.

I know, same with me.

You had "A" slice...one slice. Sounds like you got a hold of a bad pie, try a couple more slices of different homemade pumpkin pies, they really are good.

I'm with you. I've had both - can't tell the difference. But up here, in the freezer section - you don't see many sweet potato pies for sale... but you do see lots of pumpkin pies!

I have never tasted sweet potato pie but do have a hard time laying off pumpkin pie. On Thanksgiving my wife makes killer (from scratch) sweet potatos that surely must taste as good as the pie.

On another occasion, I was trying to be nice, and tried another slice at a friend's dinner party, and had the same reaction - It had an "off" medicinal taste to me...
So, NOPE! - I'll stick to my Sweet Potatoes - And did I mention I don't like "Pumpkin Spice" flavored/scented products either?

I've never had sweet potato pie but pumpkin is one of my favorites after rhubarb. I don't eat the crust anymore, being gluten free.
I have a pretty good vegan crustless pumpkin pie/dessert that's not a bad substitute... still not PIE, though.
