WASHINGTON — In his State of the Union address, President Donald J. Trump explicitly attacked New York City's "sanctuary city" policy limiting local compliance with federal immigration authorities.

Trump also supported legislation that would allow residents of sanctuary cities or states who are victims of violent crimes committed by undocumented immigrants to sue those jurisdictions.

In sanctuary cities, local officials order police to release dangerous criminal aliens to prey upon the public, instead of handing them over to ICE to be safely removed," Trump said in his speech.

Albany is a so-called sanctuary city, and has remained firm on its position to limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities despite pressure from federal officials. City code does not require local law enforcement to gather information about citizenship or immigration status when investigating criminal activity.

New York City and Ithaca have similar policies in place, while several other New York counties have declared their jurisdictions will not honor detention orders from U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement or similar entities, according to the Center for Immigration Studies...

...Just 29 days ago, a criminal alien freed by the sanctuary city of New York was charged with the brutal rape and murder of a 92-year-old woman," Trump said in his address. "The killer had been previously arrested for assault, but under New York's sanctuary policies, he was set free. If the city had honored ICE's detainer request, his victim would be alive today."

Reeaz Khan, a 21-year-old arrested for the killing in Queens, was "an unlawfully present Guyanese national," according to ICE. On Monday, the federal government sued to force New York City to hand over more information about Khan, the New York Daily News reported...
