Iowa governor signs budget cutting Planned Parenthood from sex ed, sex changes from Medicaid

DES MOINES, Iowa, May 7, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) – Iowa Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds gave her signature Friday to a state budget containing two measures denying taxpayer funds to two left-wing social priorities: gender-reassignment surgery and the abortion lobby's influence over sex education.

Reynolds signed the almost $2 billion budget for the 2020 fiscal year on Friday evening, The Gazette reported. Among its provisions are language to exclude any organization involved in abortions from receiving state sex education grants (which stands to deprive Planned Parenthood of the Heartland of just over $260,000), and to state that the Iowa Civil Rights Act does not require state or local governments to fund gender-reassignment surgery.

"The HHS budget will continue to provide grants to organizations that provide Iowa students with sex education," Republican state Rep. Joel Fry has previously explained. "We are continuing to provide the same level of funding as we have in the past, however, abortion providers will no longer be eligible for grants. We have consistently heard from Iowans that they do not want their hard-earned tax dollars used by organizations whose primary business model is providing abortions."

Pro-lifers argue that Planned Parenthood cannot be trusted to oversee sex education, based on its record of curricula and resources that teach children about topics such as BDSM and anal and oral sex and dole out advice such as that losing virginity is "all about picking the right age for you" and how to procure birth control without parents' knowledge. Pro-lifers further argue that all of this is in service to Planned Parenthood's profits, which present a fundamental conflict of interest when it comes to the purpose of sex education.

As for the other controversial provision, Reynolds spokesman Pat Garrett explained that it "simply clarifies that Iowa's Civil Rights Act does not require taxpayer dollars to pay for sex reassignment and other similar surgeries. This returns us to what had been the state's position for years." The change comes in response to the Iowa Supreme Court's March ruling that the Act did extend to "gender identity."

"The department has a limited number of funds" and is "limited in what we can cover and what we can do," Assistant Attorney General Matthew Gillespie argued at the time. Sex-reassignment procedures can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000.

The Iowa chapter of the left-wing American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has called the new language unconstitutional, but has not yet confirmed whether it plans to sue.

"Contrary to what these activists would have you believe, (the new law) may be the most compassionate response of all," Family Research Council (FRC) president Tony Perkins said. "There's absolutely no proof that this 'treatment' makes anyone happier. Even after having the surgery they seek, the suicide rate of people who identify as transgender is 19 times higher than the general population in places like Sweden. No wonder experts like Dr. Miroslav Djordjevic, who specializes in this kind of surgery, are starting to warn about the repercussions of steering patients into this kind of life-altering decision."

What I can't figure out is how everyone considers PP like it was part of our government. I mean how can you sue to keep PP in the loop? It's just another company, right? At least theoretically.
