BTW, the advertisers who buy clicks from google have some say in where those ads will appear, it's possible that they shy away from some categories like religious, etc.

It's just Michael Brown playing the anti-semite card. I wish people would save that card for legitimate purpose.
They get paid per ad that people have to watch, at least in part, before the video itself begins. Some times they have multiple ads dotted across the very long videos. Some youtubers that have millions of subscribers make a decent living this way, some even get rich. If Todd White's videos had been monetized he would have made hundreds to thousands of dollars per month. So to Michael Brown it does mean a loss of some income.

Nobody is forced to watch, you can click "skip ad", default behavior for most folks (I assume).

It normally takes a few seconds before you can do that and lately some of the ads have become obligatory and you have to wait for like 20 seconds.

It is default behavior for me. But there are some 30 second and 15 second mandatory ads that you can't skip. I don't get them very often but sometimes.

Totally disagree. Doesn't come across to me that way at all.

Even when you get a skippable ad it takes a few seconds before you manage to skip it and many ads are constructed to get the message or part of it across during that time frame, at least at the sublimal level. Even with videos that only have popup ads you will see the logo or main words of the ad before you manage to x it away. They make less money on skipped and non-clicked ads but more than nothing. 1 million views times one cent per view = ?

    Your ad options are:

Display ads beside your video - you will be paid either when a viewer sees or clicks on the ad, at the advertiser’s discretion

Overlay ads (small ads at the bottom of a video) - you only get paid if a viewer clicks on the ad to expand it

Skippable video ads (ads at the start of a video that a viewer can skip after five seconds) - you get paid if a viewer watches the whole ad (or at least 30 seconds if it’s longer). These are the most common type of YouTube ad.

Non-skippable video ads (ads at the start which viewers can’t skip over) and Bumper ads (short ads at the start of a video on mobile) - you get paid if a viewer watches an entire ad

Midroll ads (ads in the middle of a longer video) - payment depends, but usually, a viewer has to watch an entire ad for at least 30 seconds)

The bottom line is that people do make money on that. One of the ladies in my church has a son who is around 20 who is a youtuber who posts gaming videos and he makes money comparable to at least a part time job and he isn't that big.

Yes, money to be made on youtube. Useful content that appeals to an audience and an advertiser can score.
