Muslim-American groups call on Ben Carson to drop out

Washington (CNN)The leading Muslim civil liberties group in America called Monday for Republican Ben Carson to drop out of the presidential race after the retired neurosurgeon said this weekend that he doesn't believe any Muslim should be president of the United States.

Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said the group is calling on Carson to "withdraw from the presidential race because he is unfit to lead, because his views are inconsistent with the United States Constitution."

Carson said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" that he "would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that." He said he believed that Islam was "inconsistent with the values and principles of America" and inconsistent with the U.S. Constitution.

Carson is currently a top contender for the GOP presidential nomination, taking third place with 14% of support in the latest CNN/ORC poll, released Sunday.

His comments came as he responded to another controversy involving a GOP presidential candidate and Muslims in America when a questioner told Donald Trump at a campaign event in New Hampshire that "we have a problem in this country ... called Muslims" and said that President Barack Obama is a Muslim.

Awad insisted that it was Carson's, not Muslim Americans', views that are inconsistent with the Constitution, as the document states that there shall be "no religious test" for candidates seeking public office.

Awad said he was "shocked" to hear Carson's comments, which he described as "anti-Muslim." He urged the public and other presidential candidates to "repudiate" Carson's views...

This nation was founded as a Christian nation. Freedom of religion was established to allow Christians to worship as they chose and not as the king or organized church establishment ordered them to worship.

In no way was the intent to allow Islam, Buddhism, or any other religion free reign in this country, in fact, the possibility was unthinkable back then.

INTENT is completely necessary when interpreting law.

Another manufactured controversy. Dr. Carson never said that a Muslim should be prohibited from running for President; he simply said that he would not support such a candidate.

All the more reason to support him...he said that Islam is both political and religious therefore someone who is a Muslim could not be trusted to uphold the Constitution over their religion...something I totally agree with...

It's true that Islam is both political and religious, but so is Christianity, to a degree.

When JFK was running for president, some people were concerned that his Catholicism would trump his allegiance to the Constitution, that he would "take orders from the pope". In retrospect, I believe the fears were not realized.

JFK had this to say about the relationship between his beliefs and his obligations as President:

It is my firm belief that there should be separation of church and state as we understand it in the United States -- that is, that both church and state should be free to operate, without interference from each other in their respective areas of jurisdiction. We live in a liberal, democratic society which embraces wide varieties of belief and disbelief. There is no doubt in my mind that the pluralism which has developed under our Constitution, providing as it does a framework within which diverse opinions can exist side by side and by their interaction enrich the whole, is the most ideal system yet devised by man. I cannot conceive of a set of circumstances which would lead me to a different conclusion. http://www.adherents.com/people/pk/John_F_Kennedy.html
As long as a person holds to the above view, and believes in the separation of church and state, and that the U.S. should remain a nation where diverse opinions can exist side by side, I would not rule that person out based on his faith alone. Of course, I would examine his positions and attempt to determine how his faith influences his positions.

So, while Dr. Carson's statements were completely misrepresented by the press, I can't say that I agree with what he actually said.

Not Christianity from my perspective..Jesus made that clear when He stated My Kingdom is not of this world...now there are professing Christians that argue on that point but neither Jesus nor the disciples worked to create or tear down a government structure.

Unrelated to what Dr. Carson said, the Gallup organization has been polling Americans on the effect of a candidate's religious affiliation on their electability. The two groups found to be least electable are Muslims and atheists; however, according to the most recent poll, a majority of Americans would vote for a candidate of either group.

PRINCETON, NJ -- While more than nine in 10 Americans would vote for a presidential candidate who is black, a woman, Catholic, Hispanic, or Jewish, significantly smaller percentages would vote for one who is an atheist (54%) or Muslim (58%). Americans' willingness to vote for a Mormon (80%) or gay or lesbian (68%) candidate falls between these two extremes. -- http://www.gallup.com/poll/155285/at...andidates.aspx
