Newsweek Article Claims Trump Uses 'Merry Christmas' to Promote White Nationalism

A Newsweek article published on Christmas Eve claims that President Trump uses the phrase "Merry Christmas" as a dog whistle for white nationalism.

In the piece, "How Trump and the Nazis Stole Christmas to Promote White Nationalism," the author and several academics link Trump's repeated Christmas wishes to a desire to exclude other religions and foment a culture war.

The article goes on to accuse Trump of "weaponizing" Christmas and draws parallels with the Nazis.

Trump's rhetoric differs from that of Nazi Germany's, most notably because he has never advocated for genocide. But Trump's talk about Christmas coexists with reemerging white identity politics, experts say.

"Committed white nationalists love Trump's bring back Christmas campaign almost as much as evangelicals," Dr. Randy Blazak, a sociology professor who studies white nationalism, told Newsweek. "His followers see this as gospel and a rebuking of multiculturalism and political correctness, and the growing influence of Jews, Muslims, atheists and other non-WASPs."
On "Tucker Carlson Tonight," guest host Mark Steyn discussed the argument with psychotherapist Nell Daly, who pointed out that Christmas is increasingly being viewed as a non-religious holiday.

A recent Pew study found 46 percent of Americans celebrate Christmas as primarily a religious holiday, down five points from 2013.

In a Christmas Eve video conference with U.S. service members, the president wished them a Merry Christmas and added that "we say Christmas again very proudly."

I'd say this "war on Christmas" meme has been highly exagerated, and has been used for political purposes, which is not what Jesus would have wanted. People say to me "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays", I couldn't care less; I'm happy they took the time to acknowledge my presence and say a few kind words.

    Godwins law applies.

First one to mention "Hitler" or "Nazi" loses debate.

Yes, the article goes much too far, and is plainly false.

The real explanation, in my view, is much simpler but not at all uplifting: Certain politicians and media figures are cynically employing the "war on Christmas" meme to encourage people to believe that they are the victims of some kind of cultural conspiracy, and specifically, to make them angry about it. (Angry people tend to show up at the polls on election day.)

If I thought anyone was actually being impeded in the practice or expression of their faith, I'd be angry as well, but as far as I can tell, all we're talking about is trivial stuff like "season greetings" coffee cups.

As for Christmas itself, I believe it is becoming increasingly secularized world-wide; it is celebrated even by Buddhists and Hindus in their home countries. For me, even with all of the shopping hysteria, I enjoy the holiday as I notice people showing a bit more kindness and generosity around this time of year.

No, not really. While Obama might have said it every now and then he never placed any emphasis on it. Rather as the ultra liberal he was he tried to dilute it with strong secular leanings. For example his 'Christmas' cards never said Christmas:

...and remember the ornaments he used to decorate the White House tree? What does Chairman Mao and a drag queen have to do with Christmas??
