Neil Gorsuch's July 4th homecoming: Supreme Court justice rides in Niwot parade

Good article about our newest Supreme Court Judge...

Newly seated U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch returned home to Boulder County to take part in Tuesday's Fourth of July parade in tiny Niwot, drawing patriotic revelers and some protesters along the way.

Prior to the parade, Gorsuch was surrounded by a crowd of onlookers who took photos with him and wished him luck on the nation's highest court.

Gorsuch said he wasn't doing any press, but did answer a Times-Call reporter's question about what he'll miss about Boulder County: "What's not to miss?" Gorsuch responded, gesturing around at the festivities. "Everything."...

..."I'm about one of three conservatives in Boulder County," one man said as he shook Gorsuch's hand enthusiastically.

Another man joked that Gorsuch was going to have to come back every year to be in Niwot's Fourth of July parade....

...But not everyone was happy about Gorsuch's appearance in the parade....

...Breyer said he was ready for Gorsuch's appearance, however, and pulled apart his neon yellow safety vest to reveal a green RESIST shirt underneath.

"What I want to know is how did he grow up in Boulder County and never understand what Boulder County is all about?" Breyer said, referencing Boulder County's typically left-leaning reputation....

...McPherson said that she came out to protest Gorsuch because she considers him "a symbol of ogliarchy" of the Trump administration.

"I wanted to show my disdain because we have such little voice these days and so this was a small window of opportunity to say, 'How dare you sit there and pretend that you're a legitimate Supreme Court justice when you were put in place by a madman?'" McPherson said.

Chris Pennington, of Niwot, stood with his wife and two daughters at the end of the parade. Pennington wore a "Make America Kind Again" shirt.

Pennington said he didn't appreciate how Gorsuch was appointed to the court, following Congress' refusal to consider Obama nominee Merrick Garland, but said he is going to wait and see how Gorsuch conducts himself.

"He's got every right to be here just like everybody else," Pennington said.

Pennington's 9-year-old daughter Chloe chimed in to say that she hopes to be a Supreme Court justice one day.

    From another article...

...Gorsuch was largely cheered by the crowd in tiny Niwot (NYE-wat). Gorsuch lived nearby until he was sworn in as a justice of the Supreme Court in April.

A few protesters lined the route. The Longmont Times-Call reports that some parade watchers held signs and shouted things at Gorsuch about the U.S. Constitution...

I probably need to explain a little.

Boulder (the city) is LEFT leaning big time (Somebody now wants to ban drinking straws!), and Boulder County as a whole leans left.

But Niwot is a smaller, rural type community.

To me, it highlights the contrast between the Loony Left and "regular" people.

Why would they want to ban drinking straws?

Boulder environmentalists set their sights on disposable plastic straws
Suck the Straws Out of Boulder campaign to get boost from singer Jack Johnson

Between the ages of 5 and 65 — a roughly 22,000-day period — the average American will use 38,000 disposable straws.

At least, that's what the office of Gov. John Hickenlooper decreed in 2013 when he announced July 11 as Straw Free Day in Colorado.

If the governor's claim sounds dubious, anti-plastic straw advocates have other eye-popping statistics in their arsenal.

"There's enough plastic-straw waste in the U.S. to wrap around the Earth 2.5 times every day," said Graham Hill, a Boulder resident who's on a mission to limit the usage of disposable straws in the city.

Earlier this year, Hill was awarded a $300 micro-grant given out by the city and the group C3 Boulder to support climate-related local initiatives.

Hill's team is now launching a campaign called Suck the Straws Out of Boulder to educate people on the environmental harm wrought by plastic straws. His nonprofit, Shared Paths Boulder, is working with a diverse roster: University Hill restaurant Taco Junky, the nonprofit Colorado Ocean Coalition and sustainability consultant Project Azul Verde.

"I have always been pestered internally by the sight of straws that are used, that are wasted, that are ridiculous," said Hill, 54. "There could be three straws that a bartender sticks in your glass. We take products like straws for granted."...

...That movement is not unique to Boulder, but the city is a national bastion of straw opposition.

Boulder's EcoCycle is the headquarters for the Be Straw Free campaign, which is fronted by local teen and prominent anti-straw advocate Milo Cress. His work has included an effort to recruit restaurants into adopting an "offer first" policy on straws, and he's traveled around the country spreading his message.

Hickenlooper's 2013 proclamation made note of the straw resistance Cress has helped foster.

"The young Milo Cress has worked diligently to bring this issue to the attention of Coloradans and promote sustainability among the people of our state," the governor wrote.

Suck the Straws Out of Boulder would like to partner with Cress, Hill said.

In the meantime, they've already secured a big-name backer: singer Jack Johnson plans to plug the effort during his two concerts at Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre in Greenwood Village next week, said Vicki Nichols Goldstein of the Colorado Ocean Coalition....
