Yeah, but $450,000 is still a lot of money to come up with periodically. That's almost half a million dollars regularly. What could these Lobbyists want so badly they'd pay millions of dollars to have? Or, maybe I'm just naive. -_-

450K is a drop in the bucket for some of the players.
The purchase of a congress critter delivers the best return on investment, bar none. Committee members can give a better return than standard issue critters. The last time I checked, the going rate to own a member of Congress was 100K but that is the high end.
How does it pay off?
Juicy contracts --- How would you like to sell 800 dollar toilet seats? No problem when you own a few critters.
The big payoffs are a bit more mundane and arcane, mainly regulatory benefits. Did you know that it is big business that initiates most regulations? They do so to keep competitors at bay. This is where most of the action takes place.
But let's say I drop a few hundred grand on the purchase of a few key committee members. I can now write rules and regulations that will earn me millions, maybe even billions, all those juicy loopholes you hear about were bought and paid for. Spend a dime, get back a dollar, you'll never get a better return on investment.
