Obama to anti-Trump protesters: March on

President Obama, speaking at a press conference in Germany, passed up the opportunity Thursday to tamp down the anti-Donald Trump protests back home -- urging those taking part not to remain "silent."

The president fielded a question on the protests during a joint news conference in Berlin alongside German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

"I suspect that there's not a president in our history that hasn't been subject to these protests," he answered. "So, I would not advise people who feel strongly or who are concerned about some of the issues that have been raised during the course of the campaign, I wouldn't advise them to be silent."

He added: "Voting matters, organizing matters and being informed on the issues matter."

Protests have broken out in cities across the country since Trump's upset victory last Tuesday. Some have been peaceful, but there have been incidents of violence -- and a demonstration last Thursday in Portland escalated into a destructive riot.

Trump's campaign manager Kellyanne Conway repeatedly has called for Obama to speak out on the unrest.

"I am calling for responsibility and decency. I hope President Obama says, 'Cut it out,'" she told "Fox News Sunday."

Obama, though, so far has not done so, speaking mostly in generalities.

"Whenever you have got an incoming president of the other side, particularly after a bitter election like this, it takes a while for people to reconcile themselves with that new reality. Hopefully, it's a reminder that elections matter and voting counts," he told reporters on Monday.

Asked about the president's reaction to those carrying "He's Not My President" signs, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said the freedom to protest should be "exercised without violence" but that "it's not surprising that people are disappointed in the outcome, but it's important for us to remember, a day or two after the election, that we're Democrats and Republicans, but we're Americans and patriots first."

While he expressed cautious optimism Thursday that Trump would be an ally to Europe, Obama advised the president-elect to avoid simply taking "a realpolitik approach" with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Obama also suggested Trump not "cut deals when convenient," and he urged him to stand up to Putin when Russia's values "differ from international norms."

Obama also argued social media can erode a democracy, after a campaign in which the candidates' Twitter accounts -- especially Trump's -- acted as their own broadcasting outlets.

"If we are not serious about facts and what is true and what is not. Particularly in an age of social media when people are getting their information in soundbites and snippets ... if we cannot discriminate between serious arguments and propaganda, then we have problems," he said.

And there you have it! Here he had the opportunity to prove to those, who FO says have been against him, lied on him, etc., since day one, this was his moment to prove that he's not that guy who instigates division and strife, but again, as usual, he proves he IS "that guy". He can't get out quick enough for me. Ugh!

Where were the voices calling for "unity" during the past eight years?

Obama didn't "instigate" these protests. Yer Boy Trump did with the insidious rhetoric.

No, the crazies didn't protest during Obama's terms, but he has been IMO the most DISRESPECTED POTUS in my recollection...AND there were those who proclaimed "Never my President", even on this forum. Soooo...

What a selfish and disgusting man, someone has already died because they blocked an ambulance. He doesn't know what the word integrity means, he will go down in history as the worst president ever.

I've tried to avoid this topic, but President Obama has been quick to jump in (before all the facts, or even most of them came out) fanning the flames of racial tension. President Obama has done that, his entire Presidency. I think he is probably privately please about what is going on right now. And, regarding disrespect. I don't think I've EVER referred to President Obama as "Boy Obama."

That sounds like the old community organizer posing as a political activist.

I have a question....I cannot find a list of names of those who crafted Obamacare...no committee list...nothing....anyone got more info on this?

I am sure not a single Republican was allowed into the process until they demanded a right to read it just days before the ominous vote...and President Obama gave them 2 days to read and question...and dismissed every warning, every challenge..unwilling to even consider it might be seriously flawed...determined to push it through regardless..

But I really would like to know who put it together in the first place...especially since Pelosi's famous words to Congress, we have to pass it to know what's in it...so who KNEW what was in it because they wrote it?

I think in order to see the divisive we have to look at the American legislative process by design...it was designed on the iron sharpens iron philosophy...that no party should have total power..unhindered...

A good LEADER finds a way...I know you don't see it this way but he really did go in office in dictator mode and and never found his way to unify, and even now blames others for this.

Men do this in families often...my way or the highway because I know what's best...period, end of discussion....that is not leadership but President Obama was such an idealist in this that this was truly how he functioned...

FO not a single Republican Representative or Senator was even allowed to participate in the crafting of Obama Care...this is because he did not want opposition...that is not good leadership. A wise leader understands challenges are good way to uncover truth...

There are those now who say, yea we have all power now...yes and some things will be reversed or replaced...but I don't suspect Trump is going in as an idealistic Republicans..Obama himself said that...as with history, one of the legislative branches will likely go Democrat at mid term...

PS...The issue is not that Obama supports legal protests, it's that he is not calling to task lawlessness...and as an idealist he never has..he supports anarchy if it's against the other guy...there were no such protests against HIM...he is a Democrat first and a president second...so he does not want to influence this divide toward unity because that is not politically positive for Democrats...

    Bingo.

There's no doubt in my mind they are 'privately pleased'. Obama always stoked racial fires. He never tried to put them out.
