Bashar al-Assad is confident of winning the war

I get the eerie feeling that if Saddam Hussein had been around then the situation would have been approximately the same with Saddam vs ISIS vs rebels in Iraq. If Saddam had lost control like Assad has, to begin with that is. I just don't think there is much difference between Assad and Saddam, both being expressions of the Baath party that has historically been strong in both Syria and Iraq.

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
We armed ISIS in order to topple Assad but wait, ISIS is our enemy and if Assad is toppled it will leave a vacuum for ISIS to fill..
Oh, never mind.

The way I remember it they tried to arm the less extreme Muslims that opposed the Alawis and Assad but the waters were too murky that they could keep things orderly. As Spectre pointed out once, betrayal has been a reoccurring phenomenon that the Americans and allies have been facing in the Levant area.

Yes, betrayal seems to be the common theme running through these wars.
