I've seen it before too. I only use Amazon when I absolutely have to but so many ppl use them all the time.
I knew they had power and influence but this really is scary at the depth of it.

Unhooking from Amazon is difficult! I find so many other brick and mortar stores aren't carrying the stock or selection they used to... and I feel almost forced to use Amazon. I'm not happy about it, but the alternatives are difficult to find.

Agree. I resisted Amazon for years but caved in and opened an account. I'm a fix-it vs. throw it way and buy another one guy. It's just too easy to source parts, common and obscure on Amazon and have them delivered vs. wandering Home Depot or Lowes who both have big brother issues of their own, Walmart, of course was covered in another thread. :) Ebay was my go-to for many years for parts, etc. but Amazon just makes it too easy.

I ditched Lowes many years ago when they herded me into self-checkout and found out that they facial recognition at those registers. I confronted the manager on that and asked how they could do that without opt-in and then left like a dozen items at the register, walked out. I've gone back exactly once but didn't purchase anything.

I'm curious. The real betrayal seems to be from the government. Amazon owes us nothing, the government works for us. Or, at least that's how it is supposed to work.

I think this was a case of "civil forfeiture", where the government seizes a person's assets even though the person has never been convicted (or in this case, even charged) with a crime. This is a dangerous power which for reasons beyond by understanding is considered to be constitutional.

The state of New Mexico eliminated the practice (at the state level) a few years ago; I wish others would follow:
When New Mexico Abolished Civil Forfeiture 5 Years Ago, Cops Predicted Crime Would Soar. It Didn’t

In this case, it seems that the government acted at the request of Amazon. I would love to see both Amazon and government officials testify under oath as to how this transpired.

To understand that, you have to understand how "public service" works at the DOJ and FBI.

The short story is that most are watching the clock, you can retire in twenty years modestly but the brass ring is a fat corporate job at the end of your "career" so there is a lot of back scratching going on all the time. Say, Mr. Hot Shot DOJ lawyer is rounding the corner on his "retirement", well, it's time to start putting out the feelers for corporate work, so Mr. Amazon shows up at the door with a problem and well, you know the rest of the story.

In the case mentioned in the OP, I'm sure there are a few former DOJ folks working at Amazon.

Authors have little choice. 70% of books are sold through Amazon.

I have been trying to buy either direct from the author, or through other sources other than Amazon even if it costs a little more. I try and use Thriftbooks, Abebooks, etc. It's hard!
