    Sort off topic but..
There's a church in Sacramento, CA. that moved up to northern Idaho a few years ago to live off the grid. They think they're going to avoid the great tribulation ( so they say). Their kids went to the same Christian school as my sister's kids. They were an odd bunch. Very distant and fearful of everyone.
I should clarify - at the cabin - if we have no power, we have no water. It's the same problem in our principle residence downstate which is why we got a generator here.

We don't plan to get a generator at the cabin. However, we know that power outages up north and rural can last a long time before power is restored. This happened to us in the fall before we shut the cabin down - an extended power outage and temps below freezing at night. We did a run up there to drain and shut down the water.

See my previous message. Up there ^

In the woods - not enough sunlight. We are clearing trees slowly though mostly cuz the previous owner didn't take maintain. Lots of good (fire)wood down in the woods, too. We're working on that, too. In fact, we're heading up tonight to enjoy a week of wood heat and R&R.

    Exactly!

    Things to flee:
    Fire engulfing your neighborhood.
    Flooding that threatens your home.
(What else would you put on the list??)

But if you are fleeing rioters, societal upheaval, you'll most likely lose everything you have. I guess the same would be true for fleeing a fire.

Speaking of fleeing, did you know that CDC had a Zombie Apocalypse Preparedness page (it may have been taken down).

I think there is a whole bug out industry promoting unrealistic scenarios and how things would work out.

The thing is, in a collapse scenario, your safety/survival would be largely dependent on your relationships. Family, friends, neighbors, brothers and sisters in Christ would function as a network of sorts. Abandoning that network for a remote perch may not be the best idea.

The tactical bug out culture has made it near impossible to buy reloading components. I'd love to load up some rounds but I'm out of powder and could use more bullets. I hear primers are up there on the gold standard somewhere.

I do remember the zombie/CDC thing, I think it was just a parody type thing due to the popularity of "The Walking Dead" TV show.

I've mentioned before that we went through a "collapse" of sorts down here after a hurricane. No groceries, no power, no fuel, no internet, no traffic lights, no lights period. It went for a good ten days before the stores started getting groceries. Now 10 days is not that long a time but everyone behaved quite nicely. Friends, neighbors, church folks all kinda stayed in touch, helping whoever they could, keeping an eye out for the more vulnerable. It was the furthest thing from chaos, in fact it was more civil than usual.

If we get nuked, bug out bags will be worthless, it's all toast in a matter of hours.

Here on Albania I have not seen food shortages, but
the prices for flour, oil and eggs are rising quickly. Eggs have doubled the price since last year. For me no problem, but Albania is a very poor country and these prices are very hard on many people with little or no income.

I had a bit of a shock at the grocery store this afternoon... canned soup - $4.00 each - like for Chunky Soup with meat. Progresso was about 3.69 each. Canned vegetables were up quite a bit too! Crazy! I typically shop at Aldi's and their prices are creeping quickly up, too.

I haven't seen any real shortages - i.e., situations where I couldn't get an item I wanted. But the shelves are not being as quickly replenished, and not all brands of a given item are always available. And of course, the prices are rising, but that appears to be a world-wide phenomenon, even affecting traditionally "strong money" nations like Germany.

Compared to people in war zones like Ukraine, we have it pretty easy.

As long as dandelions remain edible, we're safe.
