WASHINGTON (AP) — A decades-long movement to reshape the American political map took a further step Thursday as the House of Representatives approved a bill to make the nation's capital the 51st state.

Voting along party lines with minority Republicans in opposition, the House approved the bill 216-208. That's likely the easy part, though. The proposal faces a far tougher fight in the Senate, where simple Democratic control of the chamber won't be enough.

And not a peep from the news media. If the Republicans were doing these kinds of things the media opposition would be off the hook. "Unconstitutional!" "Impeachable offense!" Etc, etc.

This needs to stop. Another email/letter/call to my senators. They will get tired of hearing my voice, but while I still have a voice, I'm using it!

I (non-prophetically) guarantee this will never pass. But given that DC has a population comparable with multiple states, I don't see why it would be a problem.

I do think that once a convict has served his or her time, that they should be able to apply to get their voting rights restored.
