100 Years Ago, for the second week of February, 1921, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:
Because of the blizzards they haven't had any mail delivery for three weeks at Willow Creek in northern Colorado. Some roads in this area have finally been opened.
County Judge George Briggs had an unusual incident in his courtroom. A man and woman, showing a marriage certificate from a minister, asked the judge to marry them, together again. The groom didn't believe the minister had the authority to perform a legal marriage and that's why they needed a judge. Judge Briggs re-married them, but first checked the man's identity to make certain he wasn't marrying a second wife.
"The Shorthorns" is a basketball team made up of Ag students at the Agricultural College in Fort Collins. Last night, their team lost to Greeley High School, 82-8.
Grape growers across the country are praising the prohibition of alcohol in America. They say they can't make wine anymore, but they've encouraged people to make their own wine at home, thus increasing the price and sale of grapes.
Attendance at the State Teachers College here is growing so quickly that they have now petitioned the city to build seven new dormitories on campus. Construction should begin soon.
Max, 13, and Merle Ogle, 11, of Greeley had a 28,000 square-foot garden this summer and made more than $3,000 selling their crops. It shows what enterprising and hard-working youngsters can do.
Thirty years after he invented the game of basketball, Dr. James Naismith was awarded an honor by the University of Kansas this week — life membership on the Basketball Rules Committee.
A local doctor has said that salt is one of the prime causes of cancer. Other doctors have disagreed with him, saying that Italy uses more salt than any other country, and cancer cases are very low there.
Editorials are encouraging schools to take more care in protecting students and teachers from various diseases now inflicting them. There are more cases of measles and whooping cough than from scarlet fever, yet schools are concentrating on scarlet fever.
Don't throw away used clothing in Greeley. Children's clothing and shoes are badly needed by the poor people of the city. Telephone Greeley 989 and the Salvation Army will come to pick up the clothing.
A registered Holstein Cow named "Favorite," won the state butterfat producing title. The average butterfat production by a cow is 56.1 pounds per month. "Favorite," a Johnstown cow, produced 102.2 pounds last month.
